Bussiere feels grounded when she’s in the presence of the moon (or “luna” in Italian and Spanish) — her dreamy melodies and self-imposed nickname “moon fairy” come from this source of creativity — and so the name Luna Li was born.

In March 2020, after COVID-19 first hit, Bussiere started posting “jam videos” to her social media — clips of her in her bedroom playing different instruments, which she then cuts and layers to create pop melodies. From these videos, Bussiere cultivated a large online following. And for good reason — the multi-instrumental musician’s entrancing tunes and vibrant fashion looks speak to her individuality as an artist.

The Toronto-born musician chatted with FASHION about coming up in the music scene, her style philosophy and her vision for the “Luna Li project,” which is how Bussiere refers to her musical alter ego.

Navigating Toronto’s not-so-inclusive indie music scene

Bussiere always wanted to make music. With a classical training background, she plays a myriad of instruments to her songs. From harp to violin to electric guitar — and of course vocals — each of Luna Li’s songs are their own distinct symphony. But before she started as Luna Li, Bussiere hesitated to pursue indie pop because of the lack of representation for Asian women within the genre.

“When I was sort of trying to find my path, it was a little tricky, because I started in the classical world, and I felt that there was a lot of representation [for me] there. I initially started to pursue that side of things because that’s where I saw myself, and not so much in the Toronto indie scene,” she says.

Feeling like she wasn’t yet where she wanted to be, Bussiere decided to leave the classical world and venture into Toronto’s music scene anyway. “Despite not always feeling like I fit in or seeing myself in that scene, I started to just realize that I was going to be the first one there to represent myself and I had a lot of support, which was great,” she says.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY FELICE TRINIDAD

Luna Li’s approach to style — and rejecting fashion norms

Luna Li’s music is optimistic, and her style reflect this. With lots of patterns, bright colours and crafty accessories, the 24-year-old artist says having a fun wardrobe plays into her overall message of positivity. She notes that her style is fluid and always changing; she likes to have elements that feel magical, while still incorporating a bit of an edge.

And, crucially, she tries not to let restrictive fashion rules impact the way she dresses, building her unique look with pieces that move her, instead of following trends. “I think anything can be cool if it feels authentic,” she says. “So I love to bend the rules and just do what I feel is the most exciting to me at the moment.”

She cites musicians Raveena and Solange as her fashion inspirations. Raveena often mixes texture and colour combos to create surrealistic outfits that match her genre-blurring sound. Solange, known for her singular style, never shies away from artful statement pieces.

While Luna Li’s outfits are intentionally put together, Bussiere’s “off duty” style is more laidback. “In terms of my personal style, I try to shop sustainably,” she says. “I love to go thrifting, and there’s a great community for that in Toronto. There are so many shops and [I try to] also support local businesses.”

[embedded content]

Blending the worlds of Luna Li and Hannah Bussiere

Doing performances mainly from her room for the past year has blurred the lines between Bussiere and Luna Li. She says this overlap has manifested itself in her style, because she’s no longer carefully curating looks to step on a stage and perform. It’s also impacted her songs. “I think my music has gotten more personal and more vulnerable,” she reflects. “The blurring of the lines has created a more authentic story.”

Combatting the male gaze through Luna Li

Working with a team of all women produces a magical feeling, Bussiere says. “It’s just something really, really special to me.”

“Like 99 percent of the Luna Li visuals have all been thought of by other women. When I first entered the scene, there wasn’t very many women working and creating, and I just sort of made this pledge to myself to make sure that I work with other women and try to uplift and support other women as I go through my career,” she says. “I also just feel that there is this essence of femininity that is a part of the Luna Li project, that other women are able to get behind and understand and help push the vision to where I want it to go.”

When it comes to things like photoshoots and music videos for Luna Li, Bussiere is focused on combatting the male gaze. “When I first started out, I was worried about being judged and men being condescending about my music, and that kind of thing. And I think that really inhibited me at first, because I was always trying to prove myself, which was exhausting. So recently, I’ve been taking a step back from that, and thinking about how I can present myself the most authentically, and what feels the best to me,” she explains. “When people can be authentic, that is the most important thing. But I can’t be bothered anymore to be worried about being perceived by men.”

Bussiere hopes to be the representation that she didn’t have growing up. “The most meaningful to me would be to have my music resonate with young Asian women who are growing up in North America, because that’s directly my experience — and there’s a lot of obstacles to face,” she says. “I hope that they can see themselves represented in my music and can feel seen or heard.”

PHOTOGRAPHY BY FELICE TRINIDAD

Luna Li’s layered orchestral arrangements paired with her distinct voice radiate a feeling of freedom, and it’s no surprise that her music has resonated with people through such an isolating time. Following her most recent single “Alone But Not Lonely,” the artist will be releasing a full-length project later this year. Here’s what makes America’s newest national park worthy of its upgrade

(CNN) — Sometimes all it takes is a little name change to bring attention to an underappreciated park. At least, that’s certainly the case with West Virginia’s New River Gorge.

Hidden within a 5,593-page omnibus spending bill in the final days of 2020 was a provision to reclassify this one-time national river as America’s 63rd headliner national park. The designation provides added protections — and new clout — to 7,021 acres of Appalachian forest (with another 65,165 acres protected as a preserve).

“These mountains are some of the oldest in the world, and despite its name, the New River is ancient,” says Lizzie Watts, superintendent of New River Gorge National Park & Preserve.

Estimates vary widely, but the New is at least 3 million years old. It could have formed up to 320 million years ago.

“As it travels north, it really cuts away at the mountains,” Watts says, “so you get to see the geology here that you don’t in a lot of other places.” There are also 1,500 plants and animals that call this 53-mile-long river corridor home, she notes.

The New River makes a horseshoe bend below the main overlook at Grandview in New River Gorge National Park.

Shutterstock

Watts says traffic on the park’s website is up 90% year on year, and state tourism officials predict at least 20% more visitors in 2021 than the record 1.4 million who came last year.

“We’ve certainly seen that as far as reservations and phone calls,” says Jerry Cook, co-owner of ACE Adventure Resort. “Because of where West Virginia is, it’s within a day’s drive of 60% of the US population, but it’s kind of unknown because it’s so forested.”

Cook says he’s starting to get interest from as far away as Chicago, New York and even abroad.

“I think the community has been hoping and waiting for something to replace the extraction business,” he adds. “West Virginia was pretty much discovered because of its giant timber and coal, which fed the Industrial Revolution. Now that coal in this county is just about out, they are looking for the next big thing.”

The New River Gorge is rich in natural and human history, but it’s also a world-class destination for rafting, mountain biking and rock climbing.

Below is a look at all the wild adventures and iconic sights that make America’s latest national park worthy of its new name.

Up-close New River Gorge Bridge tours are available through Bridge Walk, a company that will safely harness visitors to the massive steel structure.

Felipe Bascunan

Where to hike

The image most people have of the New River Gorge (if they can picture it at all) is its famous bridge, which links the towns of Fayetteville and Lansing. This engineering marvel is so striking that it’s come to symbolize the entire region.

Upon completion in 1977, the 3,030-foot-long, 876-foot-tall pass became both the highest and longest single-span arch bridge in the world. While others have since eclipsed it, the New River Gorge Bridge is no less impressive some 45 years later — particularly when viewed from within.

Bridge Walk offers guided tours where engineering buffs and avid photographers can slip into a harness (fastened to a safety cable) and walk across the massive steel structure along a catwalk 25 feet below the daily traffic.

New River Gorge National Park & Preserve became the 63rd headliner national park in late 2020.

Felipe Bascunan

Back on solid ground, you’ll find the Canyon Rim Visitor Center, where you can take the classic bridge photo. A mile down the road is the Endless Wall Trail, a moderate three-mile loop along the cliff’s edge with soaring vistas from rocky outcrops such as Diamond Point.

The most kid-friendly trek in this sector is the Long Point Trail, an easy 1.6-mile stroll to a hilltop overlook of both bridge and gorge.

The Grandview Area, 45 minutes south near the city of Beckley, offers equally impressive gorge views with the added benefit of larger parking lots and fewer crowds.

Castle Rock Trail is the most dramatic option here as it passes beneath fortress-like rock walls with exposed coal seams.

To really get off the beaten path, Watts recommends the Stone Cliff Trail (2.7 miles one way), which follows the banks of the New River south of Fayetteville, and the Big Branch Trail, a two-mile forest loop in the southern Sandstone Area that’s known for its waterfalls and wildflowers.

Rafting is available through ACE Adventure Resort and other outfitters.

Courtesy ACE Adventure Resort

How to raft the New and Gauley rivers

Perhaps the biggest allure of America’s newest national park is its whitewater. West Virginia is a major center for whitewater rafting, and the New and Gauley Rivers here are some of the frothiest in the world.

“West Virginia is called The Mountain State because it’s all up and down,” says Cook. “The mountains lend to rivers, and because it’s so mountainous, there is a lot of whitewater.”

The New is particularly special because it plunges 750 feet over 66 miles, creating advanced Class IV and expert Class V rapids as it flows through the park.

The Gauley, to the north, is dam controlled. It has a cliff-lined reservoir, Summersville Lake, which scuba divers have christened “the little Bahamas” thanks to the clarity of its water.

Whitewater enthusiasts flock to the Gauley over six long weekends in the fall when the Army Corps of Engineers releases the dam for flood control, creating world-renowned Class V rapids.

Most whitewater outfitters, including ACE, River Expeditions and Adventures on the Gorge, are based in and around Fayetteville and offer half-, full- and multi-day trips where you’ll quickly learn the difference between a chute and an eddy.

New River Gorge has some 1,400 established climbing routes as well as mountain biking and hiking.

Felipe Bascunan

Where to climb and bike

Rafting may be the park’s biggest lure, but the rock climbing and mountain biking are among the most challenging this side of the Mississippi.

New River Gorge has some 1,400 established climbing routes, many of which lie along the Endless Wall. Made up of the robust Nuttall sandstone, which is 98% quartz, these cliffs are extremely reliable and offer climbs ranging from 30 to 120 feet in height — the majority of which are geared toward advanced and expert climbers.

Mountain bikers typical begin their adventure at the Arrowhead Trails in the Craig’s Branch area of the park. This stacked loop system has nearly 13 miles of choose-your-own-adventure mountain biking — most of which is rated moderate to difficult.

Arrowhead Bike Farm, a quick pedal away, rents gear, offers tours and runs mountain bike clinics to help newbies hone their singletrack skills.

Where to take a scenic drive

The drive down Thurmond Road to the Thurmond Historic District offers a time-traveling journey back to the boom times when dozens of coal mining towns along the New River helped fuel the Industrial Revolution.

Watts also recommends the newly developed African American Heritage Auto Tour, which uncovers the stories of black coal miners and railroad workers who helped shape the region. You can pick up a free CD at the visitor centers.

To get completely off the beaten path, follow the train tracks to the historic town of Hinton, at the southern terminus of the park. It’s one of the most charming outposts along the gorge and well worth the long detour off Interstate 64.

Cross the bridge here and head north down a winding country road to get panoramic views of Sandstone Falls, the largest waterfall in the New River.

Wood Iron Eatery is among a handful of casual restaurants in nearby Fayetteville.

Felipe Bascunan

Where to eat and drink

Regional hub Beckley is the only city near the New River Gorge, but it doesn’t have much to offer tourists. Naomi Osaka Withdraws From the French Open to Focus on Her Mental Health

On Monday, Naomi Osaka announced her decision to pull out of the French Open, citing her journey with depression and anxiety.

“Hey everyone, this isn’t a situation I ever imagined or intended when I posted a few days ago,” she said. “I think now the best thing for the tournament, the other players and my well-being is that I withdraw so that everyone can get back to focusing on the tennis going on in Paris. I never wanted to be a distraction and I accept that my timing was not ideal and my message could have been clearer. More importantly I would never trivialize mental health or use the term lightly.”

She continued: “The truth is that I have suffered long bouts of depression since the US Open in 2018 and I have had a really hard time coping with that. “Anyone that knows me knows I’m introverted, and anyone that has seen me at the tournaments will notice that I’m often wearing headphones as that helps dull my social anxiety. Though the tennis press has always been kind to me (and I wanna apologize especially to all the cool journalists who I may have hurt), I am not a natural public speaker and get huge waves of anxiety before I speak to the world’s media. I get really nervous and find it stressful to always try to engage and give you the best answers I can.”

This content is imported from Twitter. Trans voices are so often silenced that the kids truly affected by anti-trans athlete legislation almost never get to tell their own stories.

The goal of Changing the Game, a documentary film out on June 1 on Hulu, is to give them the platform to do just that. The film tells the stories of three high school athletes: wrestler Mack (above), runner Andraya, and cross-country skier Sarah. All three are trans, but their experiences in sports and life vary widely, in part because they live in different states. Sarah and Andraya, who live in New Hampshire and Connecticut, respectively, are allowed to compete against other girls, although Andraya in particular faces vicious bullying, and Sarah admits she sometimes “backs off” during races, worried that showing her true skill will cause trouble. Mack, on the other hand, lives in Texas, where state laws force him to wrestle in the girls’ division. A talented, hard-working athlete, Mack wins state championships at the expense of his own mental health, enduring incessant heckling from crowds. The film lays out the cruel irony: parents and spectators attack him for competing in a category he doesn’t want to be in for wrestling women athletes he doesn’t want to face. “It feels like I’m winning,” Mack says hollowly. But it also feels like I’m losing at the same time.”

As much as Changing the Game is an indictment of this ineffective, inconsistent patchwork of policies, its deeper purpose is to give a face to the kids targeted by the anti-trans laws and the cable news tirades. “We’re not the monsters they make trans people out to be,” Sarah says. The film shows quiet moments of normalcy as Sarah teaches ski school, Andraya gets pedicures, and Mack works out and spends time with his girlfriend.

“It shows these kids as they are,” said Alex Schmider, a producer for the film and the associate director of transgender representation for the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). By telling each athlete’s unique story, we get to see them clearly and distinctly, separate from the “trans athlete” monolith. And the best part is that each of these stories is uniquely compelling and touching. We watch Sarah develop a passion for policy-making. Andraya faces down TERFs (trans-exclusionary radical feminists) and bullies with maturity and grace beyond her years. And Mack’s journey to earn a college scholarship culminates in a triumph even sweeter than his championship medals.

“So many trans youths have their childhoods taken away,” Schmider told POPSUGAR. Their lives are politicized, their innocence tarnished. It’s why the filmmakers took such pains to include those small moments of bliss, like when we watch Sarah ride up a chairlift with a young skier by her side, their skis swinging in tandem. Out of all the powerful moments in the film, that scene is Schmider’s favorite. “I cry every time that part comes,” he said, because it’s “one of the few scenes and representations I’ve seen” that shows a trans kid simply being a kid, doing something she loves.

Schmider said that any discussion of laws and policy around trans people needs to begin by recognizing their humanity. That first step was crucial for the filmmakers. “We weren’t in any hurry to put a camera in front of [the kids’] faces,” he said, explaining that the filmmaking crew got to know each athlete and their families to ensure that their lives would be enriched by the documentary, that sharing their story would empower and not exploit them. (The film features Mack, Andraya, and Sarah’s fiercely supportive families as well.) And when the film premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival, Mack, Andraya, and Sarah were all there to see it — and to meet each other for the first time. “They were so excited,” Schmider remembered.

So often, trans kids don’t have a voice in the debates that affect their lives. By thoughtfully and powerfully sharing their journeys, Changing the Game is “returning these young kids’ stories to them,” Schmider said, “making sure that they come across as the heroes in their own stories.” And even though we’re far from the track, the gym, and the slopes where they’re competing, it’s hard not to stand up and cheer when the credits start to roll.

[embedded content]

The post Hulu’s Changing the Game Tells the Sweet, Painful, Powerful Stories of 3 Trans Teen Athletes appeared first on Patabook Fashion.
