New signings, new pressure for Solskjaer

After walking into one press conference to find no drink for him on the desk, he quipped: “No water? Are we saving money for the transfer window?”</p> <p>His conversations with owners the Glazers and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward in the summer of 2018 were not so light-hearted. Having finished second in the Premier League behind <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/team?id=382">Manchester City</a>, he expected significant investment to bridge the gap. It never arrived, reinforcing Mourinho’s personal view that the will to compete with Europe’s top clubs wasn’t there, and after a complete breakdown in relations he was gone by December.</p> <aside class="inline editorial float-r" data-behavior="article_related"> <p>2 Related</p> </aside> <p>Last season, United again finished second behind City, but instead of sitting on their hands, the funds have been released and reinforcements have arrived.</p> <p>Deals have been struck for attacker <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/259836/Jadon-Sancho">Jadon Sancho</a> (from <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/team?id=124">Borussia Dortmund</a>) and defender <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/153053/Raphaël-Varane">Raphael Varane</a> (from <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/team?id=86">Real Madrid</a>) for a combined fee of more than £100 million. Crucially, these agreements have been reached before the end of July, ensuring both players should be ready and available when the new season kicks off against <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/team?id=357">Leeds United</a> at Old Trafford on Aug. 14. It marks a change from last season when <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/95469/Edinson-Cavani">Edinson Cavani</a>, who had been a free agent for the best part of four months, arrived with the campaign already seven games old.</p> <p><b>– <a href="https://www.espn.com/watch/catalog/88f27099-2a08-4c9c-9792-6aa026eff3f1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Stream ESPN FC Daily on ESPN+ (U.S. only)</a></b><br /><b>– Don’t have ESPN? <a href="http://promo.espn.com/espn/contests/instantaccess/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Get instant access</a></b></p> <p>Ironically, when Mourinho begged United to sign a new defender three years ago, <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/157073/Harry-Maguire">Harry Maguire</a> and Varane were two of the names at the top of his list and next season, his replacement, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, will be able to pick both as his first-choice pairing in the centre of defence.</p> <p>Varane, winner of three Spanish titles, four Champions Leagues and the World Cup, is a statement signing. The French defender will arrive once he and his family receive visas to travel to Manchester. He will also have to quarantine before undergoing a medical in line with the UK government’s COVID-19 protocols. He is a player United have followed for more than 10 years and they have finally got their man after taking advantage of his contract situation at Real Madrid.</p> <aside class="module-iframe-wrapper "> </aside> <p>When Varane made it clear to the Spanish giants he would not sign a new deal, and the decision was made to cash in this summer rather than risk losing him for free in 12 months, they tried to bring <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/team?id=160">Paris Saint-Germain</a> and <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/team?id=363">Chelsea</a> to the negotiating table, but sources have told ESPN he was only interested in talking to United. Woodward continued negotiations with Real Madrid during a family holiday, while new football director John Murtough and technical director Darren Fletcher — both appointed in March — spoke to Varane to sell him the move to Old Trafford. Sources have told ESPN that Varane was particularly swayed by Fletcher, and a base fee of €39.8m (£34m) plus add-ons represents a good deal for a 28-year-old at the peak of his career.</p> <p>Solskjaer’s team were the second-highest scorers in the league last season, but only had the fifth best defensive record, and the hope is Varane — quick, strong in the air and good on the ball — will help improve it. It was a deal Solskjaer had hoped to do last summer, but Woodward and chief negotiator Matt Judge believe their patience has been vindicated, having managed to get Borussia Dortmund’s valuation down from €120m to €85m in the space of a year.</p> <p>Sources have told ESPN that United estimate they have lost around £150m during the coronavirus pandemic, but point to their ability to sign Sancho and Varane during a window when a number of top clubs are relying on free transfers as proof that their financial model works.</p> <p>Yet two high-profile arrivals will not completely dampen the anti-Glazer protests, which spilled into chaos at the end of last season and <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/english-premier-league/story/4375503/man-united-fans-disdain-for-glazer-family-led-to-liverpool-postponement-what-happens-next">caused the game against Liverpool to be postponed</a>. They will, though, increase the pressure on Solskjaer.</p> <p>The Norwegian, rewarded with a new three-year contract this summer, has overseen two-and-a-half years of relative progress, but doubters will remain as long as there is no silverware to show for it. Pereira, who scored an outrageous volley in the 2-2 draw with <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/team?id=337">Brentford</a> on Wednesday, could return to <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/team?id=112">Lazio</a> on loan, but sources have told ESPN the Brazilian believes it’s time to make a permanent move away. Turkish side Fenerbahce are interested.</p> <p><a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/138860/Paul-Pogba">Paul Pogba</a>‘s contract is also a concern and Woodward must decide whether to entertain bids in the remaining weeks of the window or risk losing an elite player for nothing next summer. United are losing hope he will sign an extension and Paris Saint-Germain are circling, although there has not yet been direct contact between the two clubs. Sources have told ESPN that Judge has already talked to representatives of potential replacements, including <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/285150/Eduardo-Camavinga">Eduardo Camavinga</a>, <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/208128/Rúben-Neves">Ruben Neves</a> and Saul Niguez.</p> <p>The list of targets put together by Solskjaer and the recruitment department prioritised a winger, centre-back, central midfielder and right-back — in that order. There is still interest in <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/143637/Kieran-Trippier">Kieran Trippier</a>, but <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/team?id=1068">Atletico Madrid</a> have so far given no indication they are willing to drop their £43m asking price. Meanwhile, plans are already in place to invest heavily in a striker ahead of the 2022-23 campaign with the hope that both <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/142200/Harry-Kane">Harry Kane</a> and <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/253989/Erling-Haaland">Erling Haaland</a> are still on the market.</p> <p>Sources have told ESPN there is a strong possibility Sancho and Varane will be the only major signings of the summer. That, though, will be enough to crank up the optimism around Old Trafford that this squad is capable of winning United a first league title since 2013. New signings will bring fresh hope, but also renewed pressure on Solskjaer. Schauffele clings to 1-shot lead in men’s golf

<div></div> <div class="article-meta"> <span class="timestamp" data-behavior="date_time" data-date="2021-07-31T10:14:00Z"><span class="time" data-dateformat="time1" data-showtimezone="true">6:14 AM ET</span></span></p> <ul class="authors"> <li> <p><span>Associated Press </span></p> </li> </ul> </div> <p>KAWAGOE, Japan — Just over three weeks ago, <a href="https://www.espn.com/golf/player/_/id/5860/hideki-matsuyama">Hideki Matsuyama</a> was in isolation for COVID-19 and desperate to record a negative test to have any chance of competing in his home Olympics.</p> <p>Even when he cleared that hurdle, it was a matter of building endurance for stifling heat and shedding rust from not having played a full tournament since the U.S. Open six weeks ago.</p> <p>And on Sunday, he steps onto the tee in the final group, one shot behind <a href="https://www.espn.com/golf/player/_/id/10140/xander-schauffele">Xander Schauffele</a>, a gold medal within his reach for a country with high hopes for its Masters champion.</p> <p>“I definitely could not have believed it,” Matsuyama said after a full Saturday that began with him capping off a 7-under 64 in the rain-delayed second round and then posting a 67.</p> <p>“To be honest, the endurance part of my game has been struggling a little bit,” he said. “Thankfully, it’s held up the last few days. Hopefully, it’s going to hold up tomorrow, as well.”</p> <p>Adding to the test was a medal round at Kasumigaseki Country Club that was wide open.</p> <p>Schauffele, the 27-year-old American whose mother was raised in Japan, didn’t have a lot go his way Saturday until he finished on a strong note, firing a 9-iron to within 3 feet for a birdie and a 68 to keep his one-shot lead.</p> <p>So wild was the third round that five players had a share of the lead at one point and there was a three-way tie among Schauffele, Matsuyama and <a href="https://www.espn.com/golf/player/_/id/5532/carlos-ortiz">Carlos Ortiz</a> of Mexico going down the 18th when the American made birdie.</p> <p>That left Schauffele 18 holes away from an Olympic gold medal, and the podium still felt like it was miles away.</p> <p>He was at 14-under 199.</p> <p>Schauffele has been trying to treat this as any other tournament, and it felt like one Saturday.</p> <p>“Tomorrow may feel a little different,” he said. “There’s a little bit more on the line than what we normally play for, and you’re obviously trying to represent your country to the best of your ability. So that’s why I’ll be on the range tonight.”</p> <p>Joining them in the final group is <a href="https://www.espn.com/golf/player/_/id/72/paul-casey">Paul Casey</a>, who shot a 66 in his bid to keep the Olympic gold medal in golf with Britain. He was two shots behind along with Ortiz, who made bogey from the bunker on the 18th hole.</p> <p><a href="http://www.espn.com/golf/player/_/id/569/justin-rose">Justin Rose</a> won the gold in Rio de Janeiro, marking golf’s return to the Olympic program after a 112-year absence. It came down to Rose and <a href="https://www.espn.com/golf/player/_/id/576/henrik-stenson">Henrik Stenson</a> in Rio. This time, eight players were separated by three shots.</p> <p>“I think it gets knocked quite a bit, doesn’t it?” Casey said about Olympic golf on a calendar of four majors. “It’s like ‘Why do we need it?’ But the guys that are here are very aware what this means to one person. Well, it will be three medals, but to the gold medalist, it’s massive.”</p> <p>It’s particularly enormous for Matsuyama, who raised Japan’s expectations when he won the Masters in April.</p> <p>He played with Schauffele in the final round at Augusta National, starting out with a four-shot lead and sweating it out at the end until Schauffele hit his tee shot into the water on the par-3 16th hole and made triple bogey.</p> <p>“I’m sure Xander will come out determined to win the gold medal tomorrow,” Matsuyama said.</p> <p>Thomas Bach, the International Olympic Committee president, joined PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan under a tent next to the first tee to watch the final group start. Even with no spectators, Matsuyama still attracted some 250 people, most of them volunteers, all of them hanging on every shot by Matsuyama.</p> <p>“It does not feel like we don’t have fans out here,” Matsuyama said.</p> <p>Action came from every corner of Kasumigaseki.</p> <p><a href="https://www.espn.com/golf/player/_/id/3470/rory-mcilroy">Rory McIlroy</a>, indifferent about the Olympics until he arrived in Tokyo and already looking forward to Paris in 2024, made an early move until he was slowed by a poor pitch that kept him from birdie on the par-5 14th and a three-putt bogey on the 16th hole. He bounced back with a birdie and finished with a 67.</p> <p>McIlroy was three shots behind, along with Sebastian Munoz of Colombia (66), <a href="https://www.espn.com/golf/player/_/id/9931/mito-pereira">Mito Pereira</a> of Chile (68) and <a href="https://www.espn.com/golf/player/_/id/8961/sepp-straka">Sepp Straka</a> of Austria (68).</p> <p>All were very much in the mix for gold. Others were still hopeful of any medal, a list that suddenly includes <a href="https://www.espn.com/golf/player/_/id/11382/sungjae-im">Sungjae Im</a>. The 23-year-old South Korean needs an Olympic medal to earn an exemption from mandatory military service, though this isn’t his last chance.</p> <p>Im was 12 shots out of the lead and was the third player this week to match the Olympic record with a 63. He was still seven behind, though another big round could keep him in bronze range.</p> <p><a href="https://www.espn.com/golf/player/_/id/257/matt-kuchar">Matt Kuchar</a> came out of nowhere with a 63 on the final day in Rio to take the bronze.</p> <p>“It’s like top 3 or nothing, right?” McIlroy said. “So yeah, you’re taking peeks and glances at it and seeing how far off the pace you are. There’s still 18 holes is a lot of golf still and a lot can happen. Djokovic denied Olympic bronze, throws racket

He’ll leave without a medal and will need some time to recover from a draining performance in extreme conditions that didn’t meet expectations.</p> <p>The top-ranked Djokovic lost his cool and abused his racket several times during a 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-3 loss to Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain in the bronze-medal match of the tennis tournament on Saturday.</p> <p>It was Djokovic’s third defeat in two days and it came less than 24 hours after he was beaten by Alexander Zverev of Germany in the singles semifinals. That ended his bid for a Golden Slam, which is winning all four Grand Slam titles and Olympic gold in the same year.</p> <p>“I gave it all, whatever I had left in the tank — which was not so much.”</p> <p>He was due back on court later Saturday for one final match in Tokyo. He and Serbian partner Nina Stojanovic were scheduled to face the Australian duo of Ash Barty and John Peers for the bronze medal in mixed doubles. But Djokovic withdrew from that match citing a left shoulder injury — handing the bronze medal to Australia.</p> <p>Djokovic’s frustration was evident in his on-court behavior as the match against Carreno Busta wore on.</p> <p>Having saved a match point in the second-set tiebreaker, Djokovic threw his racket over five rows of seats into the stands after he couldn’t get to a stop-volley winner from Carreno Busta to conclude a long rally in the opening game of the third.</p> <p>A couple of games later, when Carreno Busta had broken his serve to take control of the decisive set, Djokovic again lost his cool and slammed his racket into the net post during a change of ends. He then picked up the mangled racket and tossed it into the photographers’ pit.</p> <p>“It’s part of, I guess, who I am,” Djokovic said. “I don’t like doing these things. I’m sorry for sending this kind of message but we’re all human beings and sometimes it’s difficult to control your emotions.”</p> <p>Djokovic received a verbal warning for the net-post incident, but Carreno Busta appeared to question the chair umpire as to why it wasn’t a point penalty since it was the second instance of racket abuse. The umpire, however, hadn’t warned Djokovic for the first incident.</p> <p>Djokovic, who also lost with Stojanovic in the mixed doubles semifinals on Friday, played a total of 16 sets over seven matches in four days.</p> <p>As it’s been virtually all week at the Ariake Tennis Park, heat was a major factor, with the temperature soaring to 90 degrees F (32 degrees C) and stifling humidity making it feel like 100 degrees F (38 degrees C).</p> <p>Both Djokovic and Carreno Busta put ice bags on their necks during changeovers. Djokovic also grabbed a rubber tube blowing cool air and stuck it up his shirt.</p> <p>Later, Belinda Bencic of Switzerland will play Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic in the women’s singles gold-medal match.</p> <p>Carreno Busta will have to wait until Sunday to be awarded his bronze medal, after Zverev takes on Russian player Karen Khachanov in the men’s final. That, of course, was the match that Djokovic came expecting to play in.</p> <p>Djokovic won the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon this year and needed the Olympic and US Open titles to complete the Golden Slam collection.</p> <p>Steffi Graf in 1988 remains the only tennis player to achieve the Golden Slam. The national eviction ban will expire in 2 days. Renters in these states are still protected

But some states will continue to limit the proceedings beyond July 31.</p> <p>In California, where as many as <a href="https://www.cbpp.org/research/poverty-and-inequality/tracking-the-covid-19-recessions-effects-on-food-housing-and" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1.6 million renters</a> may be in arrears, most landlords can’t move forward with evictions <a href="https://calmatters.org/housing/2021/06/california-eviction-moratorium-deal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">until October</a>.</p> <div style="height:100%" class="lazyload-placeholder"></div> <p><a href="https://www.jdsupra.com/legalnews/dc-lawmakers-opt-for-phased-approach-to-5733388/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">In Washington, D.C</a>., landlords can’t begin evictions again until Aug. 26, and only at that point if they’d filed one against you prior to the pandemic (in these cases, you must also be given 30 days notice). Illinois’ ban will be in effect <a href="https://www.domu.com/chicago/apartments-for-rent/coronavirus/illinois-eviction-moratorium#:~:text=The%20Illinois%20Eviction%20Moratorium%20Scheduled,conference%20on%20July%2014%2C%202021." target="_blank" rel="noopener">through August</a>, and Maryland’s until <a href="https://www.marylandattorneygeneral.gov/press/2021/070121CA.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Aug. 15</a>.</p> <p><a href="https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-cuomo-signs-extension-covid-19-emergency-eviction-and-foreclosure-prevention-act-2020" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York</a> has extended its eviction moratorium until September for tenants who’ve endured a Covid-related setback or for whom moving could pose a health risk. To qualify, renters must submit <a href="http://www.nycourts.gov/eefpa/PDF/Eviction_Hardship_Declaration-English.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a hardship form</a> to their landlord.</p> <p>Renters in New Jersey <a href="https://www.northjersey.com/story/news/new-jersey/2021/06/30/renting-after-apartment-eviction-nj-covid-records-private-under-bill/7794613002/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">can’t be kicked out of their homes until January</a>.</p> <div style="height:100%" class="lazyload-placeholder"></div> <p>In addition, you can’t be evicted for nonpayment of rent during any months for which your landlord accepted federal rental assistance, said Emma Foley, a researcher at the National Low Income Housing Coalition. The NLIHC has <a href="https://nlihc.org/era-dashboard" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a state-by-state list</a> of the <a href="https://nlihc.org/era-dashboard" target="_blank" rel="noopener">483</a> programs giving out the aid. </p> </div> <div class="group"> <p>The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau also has <a href="https://www.consumerfinance.gov/coronavirus/mortgage-and-housing-assistance/renter-protections/find-help-with-rent-and-utilities/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a new tool</a> to help you apply for rental relief.
