Vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers are going to different sets of Caribbean islands

Adina Eigen took her first trip to the British Virgin Islands in December 2020. Around that time, it had one of the worlds lowest Covid rates among islands that had reopened. The 42-year-old mother of four from Sands Point, New York, has since returned twice, checking infection rates — and vaccination statistics — before her trips. The staff at Oil Nut Bay is entirely vaccinated, she said of the luxury resort where her family stayed. The property is not accessible by land and very closely monitored by sea. The British Virgin Islands are part of a rising number of Caribbean destinations that attract vaccinated travelers — while proving less attractive to unvaccinated people. Unvaccinated travelers are gravitating to the islands that will let them in, while the vaccinated want places that keep the unimmunized out. Vaccinated travelers only At least seven Caribbean nations and territories have announced mandatory vaccination policies for incoming adult travelers — Anguilla, Grenada, St. Barts, St. Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos, as well as the Cayman Islands. The Cayman Islands plan to admit vaccinated travelers from Sept. 9 to Oct. 13 during the third phase of its structured reopening. Thereafter, the territory may let unvaccinated travelers enter if they quarantine for 14 days. People have more interest in traveling to islands where there are vaccination protocols in place. Eric Bamberger Zeta Global Safety is cited as the main reason behind the requirement, but such policies may also be good for business. Marketing technology company Zeta Global analyzed site traffic to the main tourism websites of several islands after they announced vaccinated-only policies, said Eric Bamberger, senior vice president of hospitality at Zeta Global. Following the announcements, travel interest increased to all of them: Grenada — up 25% St. Kitts and Nevis — up 26% Cayman Islands — up 44% Anguilla — up 59% The data showed two trends emerging in the Caribbean, said Bamberger. People have more interest in traveling to islands where there are vaccination protocols in place, he said. And their interest among other islands without vaccination protocols is waning. Data from travel marketing company Adara indicates enthusiasm for vaccinated-only entrance policies. Searches and bookings spiked when Trinidad and Tobago announced it was reopening only to immunized travelers — and then again when the policy was implemented. We have found our customers to be more interested in traveling to Caribbean destinations with more strict and firm policies and travel restrictions related to Covid-19, he said. For example, among the most popular trips being booked by North Americans, none of our tours in Mexico are in the top 20, he said. Mexico has lenient Covid protocols, but Intrepid Travel does not. Starting Sept. 1, all travelers and tour leaders with the company must be vaccinated, said Berna. Eigen told CNBC she considered going to Mexico at one point, but found it scary to visit a country with few restrictions. However, we have received a hugely encouraging overall response from new and existing visitors, he said. We anticipate it will have a long-term positive impact on bookings. No vaccine required In contrast to islands with relatively strict policies, places such as the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, the Bahamas and the U.S. Virgin Islands have entrance policies that rely on testing rather than vaccines. Data from Adara suggests travel interest was highest to the Dominican Republic before other Caribbean islands put vaccination mandates in place beginning earlier this summer. Most travelers to the Dominican Republic dont need to present a negative test, but some are subject to Covid-19 breath tests upon arrival. Covid infection rates in the Dominican Republic decreased from June to August, but interest and searches did not rebound accordingly. Site traffic increased to the main tourism websites for Jamaica and the Bahamas in June and July, but visitors spent less time searching and clicked fewer pages, said Zeta Globals Bamberger. Vaccinated people want to vacation in places that had stricter requirements, so they arent mixing with the unvaccinated. Similar sentiments may apply to travelers desire to fly. A study by the financial website FinanceBuzz published this month indicates more people would be likely to fly (48%) if airlines required vaccinations, than the amount that disfavors such a policy (27%). Line in the sand These figures suggest that islands with lenient protocols — i.e., those without quarantines or vaccine mandates — are likely attracting unvaccinated travelers while deterring vaccinated ones. Vaccinated people want to vacation in places that had stricter requirements, so they arent mixing with the unvaccinated, said Adaras chief marketing officer Carolyn Corda. CNBC asked the Dominican Republic, Bahamas and Jamaica for the percentage of incoming travelers who arent vaccinated. The Bahamas said it was unable to provide that figure. Jamaica and the Dominican Republic did not respond to CNBCs request. Puerto Ricos tourism authority, Discover Puerto Rico, has said that the island has a vaccine mandate, though it does not have one. Discover Puerto Ricos website says that vaccinations are required for guests and employees in its hotels, house rentals, restaurants and bars. Discover Puerto Ricos CEO separately confirmed the vaccine mandate to CNBC. But a closer look at Puerto Ricos restrictions shows that a negative Covid test on arrival, and weekly negative tests afterward, will suffice without a vaccine. Asked for clarification, a representative for Discover Puerto Rico told CNBC that the mandate refers to the need for either vaccination or frequent negative testing. Discover Puerto Ricos CEO Brad Dean said vaccination rates among travelers to Puerto Rico rose from 9% in May to 58% in August. AI analysis unveils the most effective email subject lines for the holidays

A recent survey by Radial found that 65% of consumers plan to spend the same as or even more than last year. Radial itself plans to hire 27,000 seasonal workers ahead of the shopping season to fulfill ecommerce orders. But to snag a share of that market, retailers will need to use the right email marketing language and tactics, according to a new report from AI-powered copywriting platform Phrasee. The report, Prepping for the Peak, uses some data from 2020 to predict what brand language will resonate with consumers. Phrasee analyzed millions of subject lines using AI for the report. This particular (algorithm) takes this huge amount of language data, deconstructs it into individual parameters, takes away beliefs and biases, turns it into ones and zeros, and looks at the patterns in the numerical data, said Parry Malm, CEO of Phrasee. For the report, Phrasee used natural language processing (NLP) techniques to look at sentiment like directness and how offbeat the language was. Then, it tracked performance metrics like clicks, conversions, opens, and unsubscribes, he added. Emojis won in 2020, but wont this year Last year, the language that most resonated with consumers focused on convenience, like curbside pickup and home delivery, according to the report. Phrasee expects this trend to continue into the 2021 shopping season. However, marketers also went heavy on the emojis in email subject lines last year, both happy and urgent. The use of happy emojis may continue to grow, as marketers want to offer optimism, but Phrasee cautions against using urgency emojis this year. Consumers likely have emoji fatigue, according to the report. Trade slang for empathy If any type of language gets overused, it ceases to be effective, Malm said. The rush to get online meant that marketers started copying one another, using the emojis that seemed to work well at the time. But marketers need to be continually refreshing their messaging, before Bye, Felicia finally says, Bye, Felicia, he added. Before 2020, marketers tended to use offbeat, trendy language in their email subject lines, like Youre gonna SLAY in these lewks! But since the pandemic, email subject lines that are direct or evoke curiosity or friendliness are the most likely to get opened, according to the report. Cream Chargers, a specialty whipped cream retailer based in Australia, plans to empathize with its customers in its messaging this year to launch discounts, as opposed to last years focus on brand image. People today are suffering from different crises including financial because of the pandemic. However, they are focused on not letting their weaknesses like discretionary spending take over, said Jane Anders, CEO of Cream Chargers. Including empathy in your messages for your customers helps you make them feel that you are on their side. HVAC company Filter King plans to test more positive messaging this holiday season, without being overly cheerful. That might come across as insensitive, according to Rick Hoskins, founder of Filter King. My feeling is that people have been cooped up inside, scared and lonely, for over a year now. I think companies might be overplaying their hands by putting out messaging thats overly morose, Hoskins said. He expects consumers to prefer a more getting back to normal tone. Trying something different is key While some retailers may be planning to repurpose last years messaging, experimenting could boost email effectiveness, according to Phrasees Malm. One of the points is to always be testing because languages changes more quickly now than previously, he said, noting that people in the U.S. have picked up British slang and vice versa. However, the big takeaway from the report is that doing something different is hard. Humans are less creative than we think we are, and being creative at scale is incredibly hard, Malm said. Companies dont need to be different just for the sake of it, but instead should define their brand voices and experiment within those parameters, he said. While its easy to get customers to open emails with spammy subject lines, thats a race to the bottom that rarely works. Ultimately, there is no specific rule set for what will absolutely, definitely, one hundred percent resonate with consumers. Language is fluid (and) whims of consumers change at the drop of a hat, Malm said. Last years data may help shape messaging this year, but companies need to test, experiment, and keep current events in mind when sending out their emails this year. Zoom Q2 Earnings Exceed Expectations But Growth Forecast Disappoints Investors

Zoomposted its first billion-dollar revenue quarter but signaled a faster-than-expected easing in demand for its video-conferencing service after a pandemic-driven boom, sending its shares tumbling 11 percent. The company on Monday forecast third-quarter revenue between $1.015 billion (roughly Rs. 7,415 crores) and $1.020 billion (roughly Rs. 7,450 crores), compared with the analysts average estimate of $1.013 billion (roughly Rs. 7,400 crores), according to Refinitiv data. That indicates a rise of just about 31.2 percent from a year earlier, compared with multiple-fold growth rates in 2020 when the COVID-19 crisis had turned Zoom into a household name due to the rise of remote working and schooling. Single-factor authentication is a method of signing in users to websites and remote systems by using only one way of verifying their identity, typically a combination of username and password. Its considered to be of low-security, since it heavily relies on matching one factor such as a password to a username to gain access to a system. But with weak, reused, and common passwords posing a grave threat and emerging a lucrative attack vector, the use of single-factor authentication can lead to unnecessary risk of compromise and increase the possibility of account takeover by cybercriminals. With the latest development, the list of bad practices now encompasses Use of unsupported (or end-of-life) software Use of known/fixed/default passwords and credentials, and Use of single-factor authentication for remote or administrative access to systems Although these Bad Practices should be avoided by all organizations, they are especially dangerous in organizations that support Critical Infrastructure or National Critical Functions, CISA said. The presence of these Bad Practices in organizations that support Critical Infrastructure or NCFs is exceptionally dangerous and increases risk to our critical infrastructure, on which we rely for national security, economic stability, and life, health, and safety of the public, the agency noted. Singapore, Sydney, Seoul and Taipei: How property prices in four Asia-Pacific cities stack up

Housing prices across Asia-Pacific are surging in some cases, by as much as 37%. Homebuyers are taking advantage of continued pandemic-induced stimulus, while international investors are looking for a place to put their money. To get a better picture of where real estate prices are going, CNBC compared the median sale prices of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom properties across four major Asia-Pacific cities: Singapore, Seoul, Sydney and Taipei. The findings draw on a combination of data from governments and local property sites. In the case of Seoul, the capital of South Korea, where properties are measured in the local unit pyeong, prices have been converted according to their comparable bedroom number. By way of comparison, the median nationwide U.S. home price for active listings in July 2021 was $385,000, up 10.3% year-on-year, according to data from realtor.com. The four cities are each international business hubs in their own right, and Singapore stood out as the most expensive city to own an apartment relative to Seoul, Sydney and Taipei. Heres a snapshot of property prices across the four cities, according to CNBCs assessment. Singapore Singapore the Asian financial hub known for its towering skyscrapers and high cost of living emerged as the most expensive place to buy property, according to CNBCs research of the four major Asia-Pacific cities. One- to two-bedroom properties in the city-states affluent central district cost around $1.03 million, according to median sale price data collated by real estate site PropertyGuru from Jan-July 2021. Three- to four-bedroom properties came in closer to $2.5 million over the same period. Skyscrapers line the skyline in central Singapore. PropertyGuru Prices for homes with one and two bedrooms remained relatively stable in the year to July. However, three-bedroom properties saw a substantial increase, with prices rising over 5% annually particularly in more desirable neighborhoods like Alexandra, Commonwealth, Chinatown and Tanjong Pagar. The centrality of such locations, combined with greater space for remote work arrangements, have made three-bedders a more favourable option, Tee Khoon Tan, the Singapore country manager of PropertyGuru, told CNBC via email. Sungjin Kim | Moment | Getty Images One- and two-bedroom properties measuring up to 99 square meters in Seouls wealthy central residential Gangnam district cost a median of $855,000 as of July 2021, according to data collated by South Korean real estate app Zigbang. Three to four bedroom properties measuring 99 to 165 square meters came in around $1.8 million. Like Singapore, price growth in South Korea has been less dramatic in smaller properties. From January to June this year, one bedders measuring below 66 square meters rose by 5%. Studio-style officetels or buildings which combine residential and commercial properties and are popular among single occupiers rose 8%. Larger properties, meanwhile, soared an average of 31% annually, with prices of the biggest properties rising the most. I believe the market is at an inflection point. However, I do not see a price pullback within this year. I forecast the upward trend to continue this year. Young-jin Han head of big data, Zigbang Young-jin Ham, head of big data at Zigbang, said the continuing surge in property prices has a lot to do with low interest rates, which led people to seek more bang for their buck, as well as ample liquidity and lack of alternative investment destinations. Last week, South Koreas central bank raised interest rates, becoming the first developed economy to do so in the pandemic era. That could cool a hot property market, but Ham said he doesnt see prices easing anytime soon. I believe the market is at an inflection point, said Ham. However, I do not see a price pullback within this year. I forecast the upward trend to continue this year. Sydney, Australia Australias coastal city of Sydney is home to some of the countrys priciest properties, despite ranking cheaper than other regional hot spots. One- to two-bedroom properties in Greater Sydney cost a median of $574,246 as of June 2021, according to data from online property siteDomain. Three- and four-bedroom properties came in at a median price of $914,969. Price gains for houses, however, were far more drastic during the same period, and rose between 15% for two-bed houses and 27% for four-bed homes. Interestingly, four-bedroom apartment units saw the greatest price increase overall, soaring 37% annually. Domains chief of research and economics, Nicola Powell, said such unit sales reflect a small section of the market in premium locations, with the majority of growth continuing to come from house sales. This reflects the changed buyer priorities, as the need for space becomes a greater priority, Powell said. It is also a reflection of an owner-occupier upswing in house prices, as investors have largely sat on the sidelines over the past year, only becoming more active in recent months. Taipei, Taiwan Taiwans capital Taipei emerged as the most affordable Asia-Pacific city among those measured by CNBC. One- to two-bedroom properties in the city cost a median of $473,500, according to June 2021 data compiled by global property agent Savills. NFLPA OKs NFL proposal for more COVID testing

8:10 PM ET The NFL Players Association has accepted the NFLs proposal to increase COVID-19 testing for fully vaccinated players amid the ongoing Delta variant surge, one of several tweaks the sides made Monday to their joint protocols as the regular season approaches. Fully vaccinated players will now be tested once every seven days, up from once every 14 days. Unvaccinated players will continue to undergo tests every day. The NFLPA has been pushing for daily testing for all players since the start of training camp, but NFL chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills said last week that current data doesnt paint a clear picture of whether fully vaccinated players and staffers have been responsible for spreading the virus at club facilities. He added that testing itself did not prevent outbreaks last season and that other mitigation policies including masking and avoiding in-person meetings and meals proved more valuable. People tend to focus on safety, and its very important that we realize that testing is not prevention, Sills said last week. Testing is not preventing anyone from transmitting the virus. It is one part of our mitigation strategy but its not the key part. Testing is obviously something that is helpful and it can be beneficial but we try to apply it in a targeted and intelligent manner and we try to test those people that are most at risk, and thats what well continue to recommend. But its not testing that will get us through this surge or the future of our season here. 2 Related As of late last week, 93% of players on training camp rosters were at least partially vaccinated. That number could change in the coming days as teams cut their rosters to 53 players apiece. The general philosophy of the NFL/NFLPA training camp protocols notably, minimal restrictions for fully vaccinated players and staff members will remain intact during the regular season. Unvaccinated players will continue to face protocols similar to the 2020 season. Other tweaks the sides agreed on this week include: * Some fully vaccinated employees will be required to wear masks when working inside, including those who work on the medical, strength and conditioning and equipment staffs. * Players who are not fully vaccinated will not be required to wear masks at outdoor practices but will still need to wear masks indoors. * Fully vaccinated players can be classified as high-risk close contacts, but still wont face the same five-day quarantine that unvaccinated players do in similar situations. But if I had to go and play five hours again, or three hours in the heat, maybe my legs would be fatigued. But I dont get the opportunity to find that out now. There was no talk Monday night about the future or whats next, but for the first time in a long time, there didnt need to be. Angels’ Ohtani won’t pitch Tues.; Trout’s calf sore

8:04 PM ET Associated Press ANAHEIM, Calif. Los Angeles Angels two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani will not take the mound for Tuesday nights game against the New York Yankees in order to give his right hand extra time to heal. Angels manager Joe Maddon also said outfielder Mike Trout is experiencing soreness in his right calf after running the bases on Saturday and that discussions about shutting down the three-time AL MVP for the rest of the season are rapidly approaching. Maddon hinted that it could happen in the next week or two. Ohtani was hit in his pitching hand by a 93 mph fastball from San Diegos Ryan Weathers while swinging during the first inning of Saturdays game against the Padres. Maddon compared this situation to late last month, when Ohtani had a start pushed back a couple days after he took a foul ball off his right thumb in the dugout during a game against Colorado. Its just sore right now. It was going to be problematic if he pitched, Maddon said before Mondays game. Ohtani is 8-1 with a 3.00 ERA and 127 strikeouts in 19 starts. He also leads the majors with 41 home runs and remains in the lineup in his usual spot as the designated hitter. The patchwork Angels pitching staff has four starters on the injured list. Right-hander Jaime Barria will start in place of Ohtani. Trout has not played since May 17 after going on the injured list due to a right calf strain. The original prognosis was six to eight weeks, but Trout has been out of the lineup for over three months since sustaining the injury. We were very optimistic and then he came up sore. AI Weekly: Algorithmic discrimination highlights the need for regulation

This week, a piecefrom The Makeup uncoveredbiases in U.S. mortgage-approval algorithms that lead lenders to turn down people of color more often than white applicants. A decisioning model called Classic FICO didnt consider everyday payments like on-time rent and utility checks, among others and instead rewarded traditional credit, to which Black, Native American, Asian, and Latino Americans have less access than white Americans. The findings arent revelatory: back in 2018, researchers at the University of California, Berkeley found that mortgage lenders charge higher interest rates to these borrowers compared to white borrowers with comparable credit scores. But they do point to the challenges in regulating companies that riskily embrace AI for decision-making, particularly in industries with the potential to inflict real-world harms. The stakes are high. Stanford and University of Chicago economists showed in a June report that, because underrepresented minorities and low-income groups have less data in their credit histories, their scores tend to be less precise. Credit scores factor into a range of application decisions, including credit cards, apartment rentals, car purchases, and even utilities. In the case of mortgage decisioning algorithms, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, home mortgage companies created by Congress, told The Markup that Classic FICO is routinely evaluated for compliance with fair lending laws internally and by both the Federal Housing Finance Agency and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. But Fannie and Freddie have over the past seven years resisted efforts by advocates, the mortgage and housing industries, and Congress to allow a newer model. Algorithmic discrimination The financial industry isnt the only party guilty of discrimination by algorithm, equality and fairness laws be damned. Last year, a Carnegie Mellon University study found that Facebooks ad platform behaves prejudicially against certain demographics, sending ads related to credit cards, loans, and insurance disproportionately to men versus women. Meanwhile, Facebook rarely showed credit ads of any type to users who chose not to identify their gender, the study showed, or who labeled themselves as nonbinary or transgender. Laws on the books including the U.S. Equal Credit Opportunity Act and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 were written to prevent this. Indeed, in March 2019, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development filed suit against Facebook for allegedly discriminating against people based upon who they are and where they live, in violation of the Fair Housing Act. But discrimination continues, a sign that the algorithms responsible and the power centers creating them continue to outstrip regulators. The European Unions proposed standards for AI systems, released in April, come perhaps the closest to reigning in decisioning algorithms run amok. If adopted, the rules would subject high-risk algorithms used in recruitment, critical infrastructure, credit scoring, migration, and law enforcement to strict safeguards and ban outright social scoring, child exploitation, and certain surveillance technologies. Companies breaching the framework would face fines of up to 6% of their global turnover or 30 million euros ($36 million), whichever is higher. Piecemeal approaches have been taken in the U.S. to date, such as a proposed law in New York City to regulate the algorithms used in recruitment and hiring. Cities including Boston, Minneapolis, San Francisco, and Portland have imposed bans on facial recognition, and Congressional representatives including Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Doris Matsui (D-CA) have introduced legislation to increase transparency into companies development and deployment of algorithms. In September, Amsterdam and Helsinki launched algorithm registries to bring transparency to public deployments of AI. Each algorithm cited in the registries lists datasets used to train a model, a description of how an algorithm is used, how humans use the prediction, and how algorithms were assessed for potential bias or risks. The registries also provide citizens a way to give feedback on algorithms their local government uses and the name, city department, and contact information for the person responsible for the responsible deployment of a particular algorithm This week, China became the latest to tighten its oversight of the algorithms companies use to drive their business. The countrys Cyberspace Administration of China said in a draft statement that companies must abide by ethics and fairness principles and shouldnt use algorithms that entice users to spend large amounts of money or spend money in a way that may disrupt public order, according to Reuters. The guidelines also mandate that users be given the option to turn off algorithm-driven recommendations and that Chinese authorities be provided access to the algorithms with the choice of requesting rectifications, should they find problems. In any case, its becoming clear if it wasnt already that industries are poor self-regulators where AI is concerned. According to a Deloitte analysis, as of March, 38% of organizations either lacked or had an insufficient governance structure for handling data and AI models. And in a recent KPMG report, 94% of IT decision makers said they feel that firms need to focus more on corporate responsibility and ethics when developing their AI solutions. A recent study found that few major AI projects properly address the ways that technology could negatively impact the world. The findings, which were published by researchers from Stanford, UC Berkeley, the University of Washington, and University College Dublin Lero, showed that dominant values were operationalized in ways that centralize power, disproportionally benefiting corporations while neglecting societys least advantaged. A survey by Pegasystems predicts that if the current trend holds, a lack of accountability within the private sector will lead to governments taking over responsibility for AI regulation over the next five years. The app, which is backed by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, jumpstarted the social audio trend last year and became known for chatrooms of thousands that included chief executives and celebrities. However, it faces increasing competition from larger tech giants like Facebook, Twitter, and Spotify, which have all introduced their own social audio chat features.
