Why Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s Chances Of Getting A Sequel Just Got Stronger

30 years after Ghostbusters 2 hit theaters, Ghostbusters: Afterlife proved to be the right vehicle to reinvigorate the media franchise. Keeping a steady box office over two weeks signaled a potential future for more Ghostbusters films. While theres no official word on a sequel, a recent development may point toward that becoming more of a reality. According to Deadline, Ghostbuster: Afterlife co-writers Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan inked a lucrative overall deal with Sony Pictures. The Reitman-Kenan deal isnt too much of a surprise given Sony serves as the home for the beloved franchise. The duos writing and Reitmans direction proved to be the right combination for putting the franchise back on top. After all, the Ghostbusters reboot held strong in its second weekend with $35.3 million. Sony roping in Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan for an overall deal showed a vote of confidence after the writing duo revitalized the Ghostbusters franchise. Studio head Sanford Panitch called Reitman a dream producing partner with a great vision for filmmaking. He even gave props to Reitman and Kenan for creating quality blockbuster films. The writing duo reciprocated Panitchs sentiment in an official statement about the incredible deal: Were excited to have evolved our storytelling partnership into a full-fledged production company and couldnt be more proud to have a home at Sony Pictures, the studio most committed to the theatrical movie going experience. Shifting from a partnership to a production company signaled Sony Pictures has faith in Jason Reitman and Gil Kenans visionary storytelling. Hopefully, this new deal will translate into more Ghostbusters sequels and other opportunities. Of course, the end credit scenes left things open to a follow-up. The deal pointed to an Afterlife sequel being closer to realization. As with many filmmakers, Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan were all about keeping the theatrical experience going. For Reitman, thats nothing new considering he grew up watching his father Ivan Reitman craft the original Ghostbusters films. Despite current circumstances, the younger Reitman wants to keep that legacy alive. In keeping the Ghostbusters legacy alive, Reitman may bring back the OG Ghostbusters Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson once again. Ghostbusters: Afterlife allowed the new and OG fans to see the three actors strapping on the proton packs again. Maybe theyll team up with Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace to fight the paranormal in New York City. While the Sony deal is a move in the right direction, an Afterlife follow-up hasnt been announced yet. Hopefully, the entire cast will be able to return if one comes to fruition. Fans will have to wait and see what project(s) will come from this deal. Until Sony gives the sequel a green light, moviegoers can watch Ghostbusters: Afterlife in theaters right now. Naperville man charged with aggravated DUI in crash that killed 3 people

“Like all alleged DUI cases, the case against Mr. Wydajewski was 100% avoidable,” said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin in the release. “As I have said countless times in the past, if you have been drinking, do not drive. This is particularly relevant now, as we begin the holiday season. It is a very simple idea but unfortunately, in far too many instances, people feel they are able to drive when they are not, and tragedy follows as alleged in this case.” The post Naperville man charged with aggravated DUI in crash that killed 3 people appeared first on Patabook News .

Man Shoots His Mother Dead While She Drives Him Home for Thanksgiving—Police

A Michigan man allegedly fatally shot his mother while she drove them home following a Thanksgiving eve family dinner, according to police. George Michael Harry II, 22, is alleged to have shot his mother Sonya Harry, 52, in the head at close range with a 9 mm pistol near the Pheasant Ridge-Royal Oak border on November 24, according to Fox 2. Oakland County Sheriffs Office (OCSO) investigators said Harry then ran out of the car and opened fire into traffic, hitting three cars and wounding a woman who was driving past. Harry had been a passenger in the rear seat of the Ford Edge when he allegedly fatally shot his mother, which then caused the car to crash, according to the outlet. An OCSO news release obtained by Fox 2 said: It came to rest in the middle of Woodward Avenue under the Interstate 696 interchange. George Harry got out and fired shots randomly at three other passing vehicles, including one in which an infant was riding. The car was struck, but no one in the infants vehicle was hit. A 43-year-old Ferndale woman was hit in the leg and was treated for her injury and later released from Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. Police said the motive for the fatal shooting is not immediately known, according to the network. Harry is set to be arraigned later on Tuesday on a murder charge, five counts of attempted murder and six counts of using a firearm during the commission of a felony, Fox 2 reported. Newsweek has contacted OCSO for comment. According to the Gun Violence Archive, a database that collects information about shootings from across the U.S., 34 people have been killed so far in November in Michigan after receiving a firearm injury. In a similar incident, police in Georgia said that a teenager stabbed his mother to death at her home on Thanksgiving Day. The mother, Marcia Chance, 42, was found dead after police were dispatched to a domestic-related assault in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Varian Hibbert, 18, her son, was arrested and charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony. And, in Dallas, Texas, a 15-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly shot and killed his own mother. Officers launched an investigation on Friday after a 2-year-old girl was dropped off at her great-grandparents home unexpectedly. The great-grandparents didnt know who dropped off the child, and officers said the girl was supposed to be with her grandmother. The great-grandparents became concerned for the well-being of the childs grandmother and therefore requested a welfare check at the grandmothers home, officers said in an online post. When they investigated the home, police found the body of Aime Salinas Alvarado, 47, who had died after being shot once in the head. George Harry II allegedly shot his mother in the head following a Thanksgiving family dinner. Jussie Smollett ‘a real victim’ of attack in Chicago

Crime Jussie Smollett is a real victim. Former Empire actor Jussie Smollett leaves the Leighton Criminal Courthouse in Chicago, Feb. 24, 2020. AP Photo/Matt Marton The Associated Press By DON BABWIN and SARA BURNETT, Associated Press updated on November 29, 2021 CHICAGO (AP) — Jussie Smollett “is a real victim” of a “real crime,” his attorney said in opening statements at the ex-“Empire” actor’s trial Monday, rejecting prosecutors’ allegation that he staged a homophobic and racist attack in Chicago after the television studio where he worked didn’t take hate mail he had received seriously. Defense attorney Nenye Uche said two brothers attacked Smollett in January 2019 because they didn’t like him, and that a $3,500 check the actor paid the men was for training so he could prepare for an upcoming music video, not as payment for staging a hate crime, as prosecutors allege. Uche also suggested a third attacker was involved and told jurors there is not a “shred “ of physical and forensic evidence linking Smollett to the crime prosecutors allege. “Jussie Smollett is a real victim,” Uche said. Special prosecutor Dan Webb said the actor recruited the brothers to help him carry out a fake attack, then reported it to Chicago police, who classified it as a hate crime and spent 3,000 staff hours on the investigation. Smollett said he was attacked by supporters of then-President Donald Trump, a report that ignited political and ideological divisions around the country. “When he reported the fake hate crime that was a real crime,” said Webb, who was named as special prosecutor after Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s office dropped the original charges filed against Smollett. A new indictment was returned in 2020. Smollett, who arrived at the courthouse in Chicago Monday with his mother and other family members, is charged with felony disorderly conduct. The class 4 felony carries a prison sentence of up to three years, but experts have said it is likely that if Smollett is convicted he would be placed on probation and perhaps ordered to perform community service. Webb told jurors Smollett was unhappy about how the studio handled the letter he received. That letter included a drawing of a stick figure hanging from a tree and “MAGA,” a reference to Trump’s Make America Great Again campaign slogan, Webb said. He said Smollett then concocted the fake attack and had a “dress rehearsal” with the two brothers — who worked on the “Empire” set with Smollett — including telling them to shout racial and homophobic slurs and “MAGA.” Smollett also told the brothers to buy ski masks, red hats and a rope, Webb told jurors. “He told them to use a rope to make it look like a hate crime,” Webb said. But Uche said Smollett had turned down extra security when the studio offered it. He also portrayed the brothers, Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, as unreliable, saying their story has changed while Smollett’s has not, and that when police searched their home they found heroin and guns. Twelve jurors plus three alternates were sworn in late Monday for a trial that Judge James Linn said he expects to take about one week. Cameras are not allowed inside the courtroom and the proceedings are not being livestreamed, unlike in other recent high-profile trials. Whether Smollett, who is Black and gay, will testify remains an open question. But the siblings will take the witness stand. Jurors also may see surveillance video from more than four dozen cameras that police reviewed to trace the brothers’ movements before and after the reported attack, as well as a video showing the brothers purchasing supplies hours earlier. Buried in nearly 500 pages of Chicago Police Department reports is a statement from an area resident who says she saw a white man with “reddish brown hair” who appeared to be waiting for someone that night. She told a detective that when the man turned away from her, she “could see hanging out from underneath his jacket what appeared to be a rope.” Her comments could back up Smollett’s contention that his attackers draped a makeshift noose around his neck. Further, if she testified that the man was white, it would support Smollett’s statements — widely ridiculed because the brothers, who come from Nigeria, are Black — that he saw pale or white skin around the eyes of one of his masked attackers. Capitol rioter busted after friend accidentally uses his real name on InfoWars call-in show

A 26-year-old California man is facing federal charges over his participation in the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, The Orange County Register reports. Edward Badalian and Daniel Rodriguez are facing charges that include conspiracy, obstruction, entering a restricted building and theft and destruction of government property. In a group chat they created on Telegram, Badalian and Rodriguez encouraged others to attend the Jan. 6 Stop the Steal rally that preceded the Capitol riot. In one message, Badalian allegedly wrote we need to violently remove traitors and if they are in key position rapidly replace them with able-bodied patriots. Prosecutors say the Telegram chat group was used to advocate violence against certain groups and individuals who supported the results of the 2020 presidential election. During the riot, prosecutors allege that Rodriguez threw a flagpole at police, set off a fire extinguisher toward them, and then used a small, black electroshock weapon on the back of an officers neck. In the days after the riot, Badalian appeared on the right-wing InfoWars program using the pseudonym Turbo to discuss video footage that allegedly showed him fighting someone he claimed to be Antifa who was disguised as a Trump supporter. Later in during the call-in program, another person discussing the same video footage referred to him as Ed instead of Turbo. Prosecutors say Badalian and Rodgriguez later went to the home of the person who blurted out Badalians first name and warned them against using his actual name when discussing the riot. They also told the person to delete photos that showed them participating in the riot. As it turns out, the person who mistakenly said Badalians first name was salon owner Gina Bisignano, 52, who went viral for spewing homophobic slurs and other hateful rhetoric during an anti-lockdown protest back in December of last year. She was also arrested for participating in the Capitol riot. The post Capitol rioter busted after friend accidentally uses his real name on InfoWars call-in show appeared first on Patabook News .

Tiger Woods says a return to the top not a “realistic expectation”

NASSAU, Bahamas — Tiger Woods says he expects to play golf again, just not very often, and he doesn’t see himself reaching the top of the sport again because “I don’t think that’s a realistic expectation of me.” He says he can see himself picking certain tournaments to play, but not a full-time schedule. His extensive video interview with Golf Digest, with whom he has a financial relationship, was published Monday ahead of his first press conference since his right leg was badly damaged in a Feb. 23 car crash in the Los Angeles suburbs. Woods is the tournament host of the Hero World Challenge. The 15-time major champion raised hopes of another comeback when Woods posted a three-second video hitting a short iron with the message, “Making progress.” He didn’t make it sound as though a return was around the corner. “I have so far to go,” he said. “I’m not even at the halfway point. I have so much more muscle development and nerve development that I have to do in my leg. At the same time, as you know, I’ve had five back operations. So I’m having to deal with that. So as the leg gets stronger, sometimes the back may act up.” Woods was recovering from another back procedure at the start of the year when he ran his SUV over a median and it toppled down a steep hill on a winding, sweeping road in the Los Angeles suburbs on his way to a television shoot at a golf course. Doctors said he shattered tibia and fibula bones in his right leg in multiple locations. Those were stabilized by a rod in the tibia. A combination of screws and pins were used to stabilize additional injuries in the ankle and foot. He last played at the PNC Championship with his son, Charlie, and then had a fifth back procedure that kept him out the early part of the year before the accident. Woods already had one remarkable comeback, winning the Masters in 2019 after fusion surgery, his fourth on his lower back. He won the Zozo Championship in Japan later in the year for his 82nd career victory on the PGA Tour, tying Sam Snead for the all-time record. “I don’t have to compete and play against the best players in the world to have a great life. After my back fusion, I had to climb Mt. Everest one more time. I had to do it, and I did. This time around, I don’t think I’ll have the body to climb Mt. Everest, and that’s OK. I can still participate in the game of golf. I can still, if my leg gets OK, I can still click off a tournament here or there. “But as far as climbing the mountain again and getting all the way to the top, I don’t think that’s a realistic expectation of me.” Woods is to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in March. The Masters is the first full week of April. Woods didn’t have a timetable, only that he wished the recovery was going faster than it was. He said he could envision a career like Ben Hogan after his near-fatal car accident. Hogan played a limited schedule, though he still dominated the majors, including winning all three that he played in 1953. “I think something that is realistic is playing the tour one day — never full-time ever again — but pick and choose, just like Mr. Hogan did. Pick and choose a few events a year and you play around that,” he said. “I think that’s how I’m going to have to play it from now on,” he said. “It’s an unfortunate reality, but it’s my reality. And I understand it, and I accept it.” The post Tiger Woods says a return to the top not a realistic expectation appeared first on Patabook News .

OAKLAND , Calif. (KGO) Amy Schneider has been a Jeopardy! fan for as long as she can remember. My parents always had it on growing up, she said. There was never an extended period of time where I didnt watch it. Being a contestant on the show has been a dream of hers. She has tried three times, and this year she was finally successful. I did the interview three times, and the third one finally worked, she said. RELATED: Matt Amodios historic Jeopardy! run ends with second-longest winning streak Now, she has made history. After winning her fifth game in a row, she became the first transgender contestant to qualify for the shows Tournament of Champions, an annual competition that takes the best contestants from the year prior. Once I got to episodes three and four, I knew the fifth one was in sight, she said. Once I got it, it was a great feeling, mostly because I was having fun and I didnt want to stop. By qualifying for the fifth one, I knew I would come back. Her win streak is now up to nine shows. However, what is important to her is the message she is sending. I am from Ohio where the only trans people I thought of were drag queens or prostitutes, she said. Seeing other trans women in a good spotlight inspired me to not be afraid of trying to compete in the thing I have always loved. RELATED: Jeopardy! all-star trio join forces for new game show The Chase She isnt the first transgender contestant to appear on the show, but she is the first to go as far as she is going. Free YMCA memberships offered to residents of Pilsen, Little Village as Rauner Y reopens

After more than a year, residents of Little Village will once again have access to their neighborhood YMCA — for free. The Rauner Family YMCA, 2700 S. Western Ave., is reopening in January and plans to offer free memberships to those living in Zip Codes 60608, 60623, 60632 and 60609, which cover all or parts of Little Village, Pilsen, Back of the Yards and Brighton Park. Although the Rauner Family YMCA offered child care services during the pandemic, all fitness services and other community programs were canceled. “While the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of maintaining health and well-being, it has also highlighted the severe inequities that exist within our communities when it comes to accessing resources that promote a healthy mind and body,” Dorri McWhorter, the CEO of YMCA of Metro Chicago, said in a press release. “Offering complimentary memberships to the Rauner Family Y is our way of creating more equity for our Little Village and Pilsen neighbors by encouraging a healthy lifestyle, and we are proud to invest in the community in this way.” The free memberships are made possible through community and corporate partnerships. McWhorter set a goal of increasing those partnerships when she took over the organization earlier this year. Spearheaded by its new CEO, Dorri McWhorter, the YMCA of Metro Chicago will offer free memberships to residents of Little Village at the Rauner Family Y.Anthony Vazquez/Sun-Times The Rauner Family Y will be open to those who live outside those four Zip Codes as well. While 2022 rates won’t be released until the center fully reopens in early January, the pre-pandemic rate for a family was $55 a month. Residents can stop by the Rauner Family YMCA to register during an open house from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday. Residents can also register at the center from 3-7 p.m. Monday-Friday or 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays until the center fully opens Jan. 2. Bring a photo ID and proof of address, such as a utility bill, to register. Residents of those Zip Codes will also receive unlimited access to all 14 YMCA locations across the city and suburbs. The free memberships will last through Dec. 31, 2022. Cheyanne M. Pfizer to Seek Approval for COVID Booster for Teens 16 and 17 – NBC Chicago

Pfizer is expected to seek authorization this week for a COVID-19 vaccine booster for teens 16 and 17 years old, a source familiar with the process told NBC News on Monday. If approved, the additional Pfizer-BioNTech shot would mark the first vaccine booster for teens younger than 18. The Washington Post first reported the anticipated move. The application for regulatory approval from the Food and Drug Administration is expected to come this week, but no timeline was provided for when the department would act. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention broadened its recommendation for COVID-19 booster shots to include all adults because of the new omicron variant. The agency had previously approved boosters for all adults, but only recommended them for those 50 years and older or living in long-term care settings. For more on this story, go to NBC News. University of Texas infectious disease expert gives insight into new omicron variant

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Scientists all over the world are watching a new variant of COVID-19, called omicron, closely. The World Health Organization last week designated omicron as a “variant of concern,” and Dr. Anthony Fauci said over the weekend he “would not be surprised” if it was already in the country. Experts at the LaMontagne Center for Infectious Disease on the University of Texas at Austin campus study these kinds of pathogens and track their spread through populations. They aren’t surprised either the U.S. is bracing for another new variant. Five things to know about omicron, new COVID-19 ‘variant of concern’ In fact, Dr. Andy Ellington said based on how the virus has mutated so far, these kinds of variants could become a regular occurrence — similar to influenza, evolving almost every year. Ellington, who also teaches molecular biosciences at UT, said scientists are particularly concerned with omicron because of how many mutations it has. Additionally, they are concerned about how many mutations are located on the spike protein — the part of the virus that binds to human cells. “That could further impact the ability of the virus to bind to the host receptor, and potentially could also impact the ability of antibodies, either raised in our own systems or provided as therapeutics, to bind, and thereby prevent the virus from getting to our systems,” Ellington explained. “As the virus mutates, it gets to roll the dice differently than it normally would, and we don’t yet know how that’s going to play out. But as a variant of concern, we worry that the virus is going to have the odds more in its favor than it did before.” It’s ‘omicron,’ not ‘omnicron’: COVID variant’s spelling doesn’t have two Ns Still, he says the vaccine is the best protection for individuals and against further mutations. “So at one end, if nobody in the world was vaccinated, the virus would have free reign. At the other end, if everyone in the world had been vaccinated, it would have very little place to go,” he said. “We are somewhere in between.” As a precaution, the U.S. on Monday restricted travel from at least eight southern African countries, where omicron emerged. New COVID-19 variant omicron causes world concern, US bans travel from South Africa Ellington said, when it comes to viral evolution, restricting travel can slow the spread of a virus variant. Still, he says it’s important for leaders to consider all the other implications of travel bans, especially if we are bracing for variants to continue mutating into the future. “Travel bans should make it harder to spread, as does wearing a mask, as does getting a vaccine,” he said. “That doesn’t mean it won’t spread — it hopefully means that it will spread more slowly.” The post University of Texas infectious disease expert gives insight into new omicron variant appeared first on Patabook News .

Emmit King, Former Olympian And Alabama Track Star, Killed In Shootout

BESSEMER, Ala. (AP) — A former University of Alabama track star and Olympian was killed in a shootout with another man, authorities say. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Monday identified Emmit King and Willie Albert Wells as the two men who died after exchanging gunfire in Bessemer on Sunday, AL.com reported. King, 62, was a sprinter and a member of the U.S. relay team for the Summer Olympics in 1984 and 1988, but he didn’t compete. He ran for Jefferson State Community College and for the University of Alabama, where he became the 1983 NCAA national champion in the 100 meters. That same year, he won the bronze in the 100 meters at the first World Championships. Authorities said King and Wells, 60, knew each other and were arguing outside a house Sunday afternoon when they both pulled out guns and fired. Wells was pronounced dead at the scene, and King died later at a hospital. !function(f,b,e,v,n,t,s){if(f.fbq)return;n=f.fbq=function(){n.callMethod? n.callMethod.apply(n,arguments):n.queue.push(arguments)};if(!f._fbq)f._fbq=n; n.push=n;n.loaded=!0;n.version=2.0;n.queue=[];t=b.createElement(e);t.async=!0; t.src=v;s=b.getElementsByTagName(e)[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(t,s)}(window,document,script,https://connect.facebook.net/en_US/fbevents.js); fbq(init, 1621685564716533); fbq(track, "PageView"); var _fbPartnerID = null; if (_fbPartnerID !== null) { fbq(init, _fbPartnerID + ); fbq(track, "PageView"); } (function () { use strict; document.addEventListener(DOMContentLoaded, function () { document.body.addEventListener(click, function(event) { fbq(track, "Click"); }); }); })(); The post Emmit King, Former Olympian And Alabama Track Star, Killed In Shootout appeared first on Patabook News .

Greg Gutfeld on Waukesha attack: The soft bigotry of low expectations turns deadly

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles! Sometimes in the media you end up in dangerous places. The weird thing is often the dangerous places the media goes to were mainly created by the media themselves. Its like someone having a bad acid trip. Its totally self-induced. Kat understands.  Take last years riots. The media bravely covered it calling it mostly peaceful because nothing says mostly peaceful like a man shot dead protecting his business. That giant lie handicapped the police so they couldnt do a damn thing to stop the riots without being accused of attacking mostly peaceful protesters. The media protected the mob, so the cities burned, and people died. This moved beyond the riots to a nationwide crime wave because as long as you dismiss the crime, you create more crime. You can do it with words.  GREG GUTFELD: AMERICANS ARE FOCUSED ON THE CRIME WAVE, THE LEFT IS FOCUSED ON LANGUAGE A man on a bike rides past a city truck on fire outside the Kenosha County Courthouse in Kenosha, Wisconsin, U.S., during protests following the police shooting of Black man Jacob Blake August 23, 2020. Picture taken August 23, 2020. Mike De Sisti/Milwaukee Journal Sentinel via USA TODAY via REUTERS MANDATORY CREDIT ( Mike De Sisti/Milwaukee Journal Sentinel via USA TODAY via REUTERS MANDATORY CREDIT) Heres a recent tweet by CNN.  Waukesha will hold a moment of silence today marking one week since a car, a car drove through a city Christmas parade killing six people and injuring scores of others.  So a car drove through a parade. Not a racist madman but a car. Thank God he didnt have a driver. It could have been worse. This from a network that takes pains to uncover any human responsible for a silly meme that hurts their feelings, but here a massacre caused by an inanimate object. They blame it on a curling iron, if they thought they could get away with it. And suddenly the media is no longer interested in domestic terrorism. They will also label a Black politician a White supremacist, but when the suspect has more racist social media than Louis Farrakhan, its the car at fault. You get it. When youre in the media, identifying who is responsible must be avoided if it makes you seem racist to the activist class. So focus on the object and hope the public is as stupid as you think it is.  GREG GUTFELD: STORIES LIKE THESE SHOW YOU HOW THE MEDIA WORKS You can run over a Christmas parade and kill twice as many people as the Boston Marathon bombers, and they will call it an accident. The soft bigotry of low expectations turns into crime and murder because they believe minorities arent responsible for themselves. Now we have organized looting, the question isnt why its happening? Its why the hell not? If youre a criminal, its like stealing Stevie Wonders french fries. This risk is tiny compared to mugging or drug dealing. Here you can easily overrun a business and steal 900 bucks worth of stuff per person. Thats the law in California. So forget robbing a guy coming off a shift at Arbys. All you get is 50 bucks and you end up smelling like a roast beef sandwich.  They now have decriminalized crime and the risk is nil. They might as well advertise it on TV. Its Black Friday every day and everything is marked off 100%. The first 100 customers bust into a storefront window gets a flatscreen and victim status. The media will say dont call it looting because thats racist. Perhaps even covering these crimes at all is racist too. Criminals understand this as they see Democrats are more worried about protecting people from old statues then active crime scenes.  As retail dies, Amazon must be grinning until the next wave goes after their drivers. They will be the new stagecoaches. Instead of guns their drivers will defend themselves with bottles of urine. Now, if youre in the media chances are you protected, as I tape the show, we have security. They make sure the fans in this audience dont attack me, which happens when you are this sexy. Some nights, I feel like Tom Jones trying to get to his dressing room at the Sahara. You 80-year-olds know what I mean. But we have security, especially when we go outside, like when Jesse gets his hair cut. Supercuts can get chaotic, especially since Jesse never tips.  But what happens to those who try to protect the media from the stories that they try to cover? Kevin Nishita, security guard, was shot and killed trying to protect the KRON TV news crew while covering a smash and grab in the Bay Area. As he tried to stop thugs, he was murdered. He was a former cop, who had just retired. He had a wife and kids. Unlike AOCs criminals, he was actually trying to feed his family. Will this wake the media up that crime is out of control and those helping you cover and lose their lives? Will his death remind them again that theres a cost in redefining crime as a form of protest? Will his death have any effect on those who see crime as a joke? Like Seth Rogen.  LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA MAY 16: Seth Rogen speaks onstage during the 2021 MTV Movie amp;amp; TV Awards at the Hollywood Palladium on May 16, 2021 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Kevin Mazur/2021 MTV Movie and TV Awards/Getty Images for MTV/ViacomCBS) (Kevin Mazur/2021 MTV Movie and TV Awards/Getty Images for MTV/ViacomCBS) When a guy on Twitter claimed he was robbed in L.A., Rogen blamed the victim saying dont leave anything valuable in the car. Its called living in a big city. He added he had been robbed before and that once the guy accident left cool knife in my car so if it keeps happening, you might get a little treat. The guy is so out of touch he pretends being a crime victim is delightful. No wonder he is typecast as an idiot. But what if the next time that knife isnt left not in your car but in your back. Seth hasnt had to think about that. Hes rich. Its easy for him to rebound from victimization. Plus, hes always armed with box office poison.  Just imagine if our detectives ignored victims when they report crimes. Skit of man and woman mocking Seth Rogens tweets. Woman: I hear youre the best detective in town and I want to hire you. Joe Machi: What for toots? CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP Woman: My store. Fifteen people robbed it yesterday. Machi: Doll, this is a big city. thats a misdemeanor. Get used to it. Woman: But I am ruined. They took everything. Machi: What you dames dont understand is when you move out of the sticks, you got to take the good with the bad. The bad is you are constantly being robbed, you being overtaxed, and homeless people poop in your yard. The good is, we used to have restaurants. If now youll excuse me, Im moving to Texas. I have to help Beto ORourke get a personality. Gutfeld: I have no idea what accent that was, but I liked it. Maybe the media should consider the sacrifice made by people like Mr. Nishita, so they could cover their stories. Nishita was shot dead by a thug. Or as CNN might describe it, a bullet drove through the air and struck a man who happened to be in its path.  This article is adapted from Greg Gutfelds opening monologue on the November 29, 2021, edition of Gutfeld! New draft redistricting map in Florida cuts up Murphy’s seat, boosts GOP

A view of the historic Old Florida State Capitol building through the columns of the current New Capitol on Nov. 10, 2018, in Tallahassee, Florida. | Mark Wallheiser/Getty Images TALLAHASSEE — Democrats and Republicans in Florida had reached an uneasy truce over redistricting, avoiding a major public conflict even weeks after the GOP-led state Senate had released its preliminary maps. That ended Monday. Democrats teed off on new draft congressional maps published by the Republican-led Florida House, accusing the opposing party of playing political games with the redistricting process. The public friction comes after the Republican-led state Senate earlier this month released maps that gave the GOP an additional congressional seat, but faced more criticism from Republicans than Democrats because it was seen as not aggressive enough. “Earlier this month, the Florida State Committee on Reapportionment released draft maps that appeared to be a good starting point, accommodating the state’s population shifts without turning existing representation upside down,” said Kelly Burton, president of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee. “Today, House Republicans are using new draft maps to show exactly how badly they can gerrymander the state.” The Florida House on Monday released two draft maps that would have given former President Donald Trump an advantage based on the 2020 election results: One draft would have Trump winning 17 of 28 districts while the second has him winning 18 districts. The drafts are designed to show the change, not to affect the outcome of the election. All four state Senate congressional drafts released earlier this month include 16 districts Trump would have won. Trump won 16 of the state’s current 27 congressional districts. Florida is gaining a new seat due to continued population growth. One seat getting specific attention is the 7th Congressional District, an Orlando-area seat held by Democrat Stephanie Murphy. One House map would slice the seat up, giving all of increasingly Democratic Seminole County to a district currently represented by Republican Mike Waltz. It also shifts the western boundary into largely African-American areas of Orlando, covering much of the territory represented currently by Democratic Rep. Val Demings, a Black former Orlando police chief vacating her seat to run for U.S. Senate against Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.). It leaves Murphy, who is Vietnamese-American, with the choice of running in a seat that is now slightly Republican-leaning, or a Democratic seat whose demographic makeup is tailor made for a Black candidate. “The second Congressional plan from the Florida House is a pretty notable gerrymander. It nukes #fl07 Murphys seat,” tweeted Democratic data consultant Matthew Isbell. “This is by far the most aggressive plan.” Democrats had been concerned that Republican map drawers would try and blow up Murphy’s seat, a fear that prompted her to consider running for Senate — rather than reelection — this summer. Unlike the draft maps released by the Florida House, each draft map release by the state Senate leaves Murphy with an unsplit district that is a clear performance advantage for Democrats. Murphy did not return a request seeking comment. The House-drawn state legislative maps also give an edge to the GOP. The maps maintain wide Republican advantages, giving the party 70 of the chamber’s 120 seats on one map, and 68 on another. Republicans have long held huge majorities in the Florida Legislature’s lower chamber, a dynamic that would continue to be built on over the next decade under the proposed draft maps. House Minority Leader Evan Jenne (D-Dania Beach) said he was “still reviewing” his Republican-dominated chamber’s maps, but said the process has not been transparent. “They have months/years of drawing maps behind closed doors,” he said in a text message. “Going to take a while to digest it.” The House release comes after what had so far been a controversy-free redistricting process in Florida. During the last map-drawing process, Florida faced four years of accusations of untoward partisan influence as well as legal challenges and brought the Fair Districts anti-gerrymandering amendments to the state Constitution by voters in 2010. As a result of the legal fights, raised by left-leaning voter rights groups, the state’s current congressional and state Senate seats were drawn by the Florida Supreme Court. Concerned of running afoul of those provisions, the Republican-led Florida Senate published what some Republicans saw as overly cautious maps, and GOP House leaders have been clear with members to avoid the appearance that politics is influencing map drawing. “The House strongly discourages members from having planned or unplanned conversations about redistricting with individuals who have a vested interest in the outcomes of the redistricting process,” House Redistricting Committee Chair Tom Leek (R-Ormond Beach) wrote in a memo to his members. House redistricting panels that oversee the legislative and congressional map-drawing process are set to meet in the Capitol this week to consider the newly-published plans, but maps are not expected to be finalized until the regular 2022 legislative session, which begins in January. After a brief meeting Monday, Senate Select Subcommittee on Congressional Reappointment Chair Jennifer Bradley (R-Fleming Island) said she thinks the Senate will return to consider its chamber’s maps during the first week or two of the legislative session. The Senate released a second set of maps last week, but they made only a slight change that did minimize the splitting of cities but did little to impact partisan makeup. “We have come extraordinarily far in what has been an extremely condensed amount of time, Bradley told reporters. I believe were on the right track for success. This article tagged under: The post New draft redistricting map in Florida cuts up Murphy’s seat, boosts GOP appeared first on Patabook News .

Republican Colleague Tom Reed Calls Lauren Boebert’s Vile Attacks A ‘Pox On All Our Houses’

This “has to stop,” an outraged Rep. Tom Reed (R-N.Y.) said Monday of the racist and Islamophobic attacks by Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), calling her behavior a “pox on all our houses.” He was referring to Boebert’s appalling joke in a speech to constituents last week in which she suggested that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), a Muslim, could be a suicide bomber. “I condemn the kind of comments that were made by my colleague in Congress towards a fellow colleague on the other side of the aisle,” Reed said on CNN’s “OutFront.” “This is a pox on all our houses.” He added: “We have degraded to a point in the institution of Congress [to a] level of hate I’ve never felt before.” This “rhetoric, this type of commentary, has to stop. We need to focus on the American people and solving their problems. That’s got to be the mission,” said Reed, the former leader of the House Problem Solvers Caucus. This is the “institution of Congress, this is the People’s House, and we have to respect each other,” Reed added. American citizens “should be working together as opposed to engaging in what could be called antics of a high-school-level nature.” Boebert claimed in her talk to constituents in Colorado that she had just stepped into an elevator with Omar at the U.S. Capitol recently when a concerned police officer rushed over before the doors closed. “I look to my left and there she is, Ilhan Omar,” Boebert said with a laugh in a video clip of her tale. “I say, well, she doesn’t have a backpack, we should be fine.” She also claimed she glanced at the Democratic lawmaker and said: “Oh, look, the jihad squad decided to show up for work today.” Omar said none of that happened. Boebert claimed she called Omar on Monday to apologize — but attacked her instead — and suggested Omar “sympathizes with terrorists.” “I never want anything I say to offend someone’s religion, so I told her that,” Boebert recounted Monday in an Instagram video recapping the conservation. Story continues But then Boebert said she told Omar that “she should make a public apology to the American people for her anti-American, anti-Semitic, anti-police rhetoric.” That’s when Omar ended the call. Omar is calling for Boebert to face some sort of sanction from House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), which is unlikely. “To date, the Republican Party leadership has done nothing to condemn and hold their own members accountable for repeated instances of anti-Muslim hate and harassment,” Omar said in a statement Monday. “This is not about one hateful statement or one politician; it is about a party that has mainstreamed bigotry and hatred. It is time for Republican Leader McCarthy to actually hold his party accountable.” Also on HuffPost This article originally appeared on HuffPost and has been updated. George Clooney Talks Near-Death Accident And The Sobering Truth He Realized About Fame

George Clooneys impact on Hollywood has been massive and wide-ranging. As an actor, producer and gifted director, hes been prolific, and his celebrity status has made him famous worldwide. Hell be the first to admit, though, that theres a sobering reality to the level of fame hes amassed and he realized the extent of that reality following a near-death accident. In 2018, the star was in Sardinia filming Hulus Catch-22 when was thrown from his motorcycle after a car turned in front of it while he was riding it. The Oscar winner told The Sunday Times that as he was lying on the ground and waiting for medical assistance to arrive, a group of onlookers began to film him on their phones. He said it was a harsh reality check: If youre in the public eye, what you realise when youre on the ground thinking its the last minute of your life is that, for some people, its just going to be entertainment for their Facebook page. Im a pretty positive guy, but that told me, clearly, that you really are here just for their entertainment. You want to take every one and shake them. Its easy to sympathize with George Clooney in this situation it must have been doubly painful to be treated as a kind of attraction in such a vulnerable and frightening moment. He was eventually taken to the hospital and was able to recover from his injuries, but the moment still left him shaken. The veteran actor clearly has a complicated relationship with fame. He recently turned 60 years old, and hes been very open in reflecting as he enters a new era of his life. His private life has often been a source of tabloid fodder, and pop culture aficionados and fans have diligently tracked the highs and lows of his career. With time, hes found a way to both move past and embrace his cringier career moments (like Batman and Robin), which has only endeared him to fans even more. Though hes never shied away from the spotlight on his professional life, he has been vocal about his disdain for the more invasive parts of celebrity culture. He has admonished the press for prying into his wife Amal and their kids lives and has made it clear he doesnt believe that having his privacy invaded should be part of his job description. That would surely extend to the situation he faced in Sardinia, and its clear to see why he found it so troubling. Despite this harsh reality, George Clooney continues to pursue his passion for acting and filmmaking. Hes currently filming Ticket to Paradise with Julia Roberts and Billie Lourd. His most recent directorial venture, The Tender Bar, stars Ben Affleck and premieres on December 17th. Zendaya and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Costar J.B. Smoove Called Them the ‘Most Adorable Couple’

Comedian J.B. Smoove is co-star to Zendaya and Tom Holland in the Spider-Man films, so hes been able to observe their relationship first hand. And hes a fan. Smoove and his wife Shahidah Omar attended the American Music Awards at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles last weekend; while on the red carpet he told ETs Cassie DiLaura Oh, I love those two. I love them so much. He added that they were the most adorable couple ever in the history of adorableness. Then Smoove offered a little romantic advice, as an older married man. Have time for love but have time for laughter, he said. Laughter. Smiles. Stress-free lifestyle, you know. Find out about each other and find some way to keep watering that seed and keep growing and growing. That does sound like something a comedian would suggest, but it works for anyone. Rumors that Zendaya and Tom Holland were dating have been circulating since 2017, when they went on their Spider-Man press tour. This summer, Page Six shared photos of them kissing in a car at a red light in Los Angeles close to Zendayas mothers house, who they visited together. Zendaya, at least, regrets that their relationship is no longer so private. In an interview with GQ, Zendaya said, The equal sentiment [we both share] is just that when you really love and care about somebody, some moments or things, you wish were your own I think loving someone is a sacred thing and a special thing and something that you want to deal with and go through and experience and enjoy amongst the two people that love each other. People knowing about their relationship also leaves them open to comments about it, like when Timothe Chalamet, Zendayas co-star in Dune, teased her about Holland. While promoting their film, they answered questions about each other for a Buzzfeed quiz. One question was who their biggest celebrity crush is. Easy, Tom Holland, Chalamet answered for Zendaya, making her giggle. She and Holland are, in fact, pretty adorable. This Basic Exercise Is Guaranteed to Make Your Butt and Hamstrings Sore

Want to work your legs and butt but dont have any weights? Find a step, box, bench, or sturdy chair and learn how to do a step-up. This exercise combines the action of the lunge with stepping upward, like climbing stairs, to really target your butt, quads, and upper hamstrings. Weve broken down this step-up exercise into three variations so you can find the version that works best for your level of fitness. If you want to make this move harder, hold a dumbbell or a kettlebell in each hand, and do dumbbell step-ups. You can also do variations where you do multiple reps on one leg at a time to really target your glutes, quads, and hamstrings. Aside from a lower-body-burn, this is also a great cardio exercise! How to Do a Step-Up A step-up is a basic exercise you can do at the gym, at home, or even outside to strengthen your legs and butt. As long as you have access to a sturdy step, box, bench, or chair, you can do this lower-body, strength-training exercise. Aside from targeting your leg and butt muscles, this is perfect for getting your heart rate up, too, so you can do it as part of your warmup. If youre new to this exercise, step on something low, then work your way to something higher. This exercise requires balance, so focus on keeping your core strong for stability. Step-Up Exercise: Beginner Before you start, find a step, chair, box, or bench that when you place your foot on it, your knee bends to a 90-degree angle. The weight benches or plyo boxes are often the right height, but a dining room chair can work too for an at-home strength-training session. If this seems too high, start with a lower step or box. To start, place your entire right foot onto the step, chair, box, or bench. Press through your right heel as you step onto the bench, bringing your left foot to meet your left so you are standing on the bench. Return to the starting position by stepping down with the right foot, then the left so both feet are on the floor. Complete 15 steps leading with the left foot, then repeat another 15 steps leading with your left foot. Do three sets. Step-Up Exercise: Intermediate This is a toe-tap variation that will challenge your balance and work your glutes even more. This version works best with a shorter weight bench or a coffee table rather than a chair prepare to feel the burn! Start by stepping onto the bench with your right foot. Straighten your right leg to stand on the bench while lifting your left leg, bending your knee up, so the hip and knee are both at 90-degree angles (shown in the photo above). Keeping your right foot on the bench, bend your right knee as you lower your left foot to tap the floor with your left toes without putting all your weight into your left foot. This completes one rep. Without stopping, press through your right heel as you straighten your right knee to stand with both feet on the bench. Your right glute should be engaged for the entire set of reps. Thats why it burns! Repeat for 15 reps on each leg. Do three sets. Step-Up Exercise: Advanced Youll need a pair of dumbbells or kettlebells for this variation. Start with something lightweight (three to eight pounds), then increase to heavier weights (10 to 20 pounds). Try the beginner variation explained above while holding dumbbells starting with five-pound weights in each hand and working up to 20-pound dumbbells. If youre ready for an extra challenge, try the toe-tap version. Repeat for 15 reps on each leg. Do three sets. 14-year-old boy critically wounded in Back of the Yards shooting

A 14-year-old boy was shot and critically wounded Monday morning in Back of the Yards on the South Side. The teen was walking about 12:50 a.m. in the 1800 block of West 46th Street, when he was shot multiple times, Chicago police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition with gunshot wounds to his arm and legs, police said. No one was in custody. Merriam-Webster Chooses ‘Vaccine’ as 2021 Word of the Year – NBC Chicago

With an expanded definition to reflect the times, Merriam-Webster has declared an omnipresent truth as its 2021 word of the year: vaccine. “This was a word that was extremely high in our data every single day in 2021,” Peter Sokolowski, Merriam-Websters editor-at-large, told The Associated Press ahead of Mondays announcement. “It really represents two different stories. One is the science story, which is this remarkable speed with which the vaccines were developed. But theres also the debates regarding policy, politics and political affiliation. Its one word that carries these two huge stories,” he said. The selection follows “vax” as word of the year from the folks who publish the Oxford English Dictionary. And it comes after Merriam-Webster chose “pandemic” as tops in lookups last year on its online site. “The pandemic was the gun going off and now we have the aftereffects,” Sokolowski said. At Merriam-Webster, lookups for “vaccine” increased 601% over 2020, when the first U.S. shot was administered in New York in December after quick development, and months of speculation and discussion over efficacy. The worlds first jab occurred earlier that month in the UK. Compared to 2019, when there was little urgency or chatter about vaccines, Merriam-Webster logged an increase of 1,048% in lookups this year. Debates over inequitable distribution, vaccine mandates and boosters kept interest high, Sokolowski said. So did vaccine hesitancy and friction over vaccine passports. The word “vaccine” wasnt birthed in a day, or due to a single pandemic. The first known use stretches back to 1882 but references pop up earlier related to fluid from cowpox pustules used in inoculations, Sokolowski said. It was borrowed from the New Latin “vaccina,” which goes back to Latins feminine “vaccinus,” meaning “of or from a cow.” The Latin for cow is “vacca,” a word that might be akin to the Sanskrit “vasa, according to Merriam-Webster. Inoculation, on the other hand, dates to 1714, in one sense referring to the act of injecting an “inoculum.” Earlier this year, Merriam-Webster added to its online entry for “vaccine” to cover all the talk of mRNA vaccines, or messenger vaccines such as those for COVID-19 developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna. While other dictionary companies choose words of the year by committee, Merriam-Webster bases its selection on lookup data, paying close attention to spikes and, more recently, year-over-year increases in searches after weeding out evergreens. The company has been declaring a word of the year since 2008. Among its runners-up in the word biography of 2021: INSURRECTION: Interest was driven by the deadly Jan. 6 siege on the U.S. Capitol. Arrests continue, as do congressional hearings over the attack by supporters of President Donald Trump. Some of Trump’s allies have resisted subpoenas, including Steve Bannon. Searches for the word increased by 61,000% over 2020, Sokolowksi said. INFRASTRUCTURE: President Joe Biden was able to deliver what Trump often spoke of but never achieved: A bipartisan infrastructure bill signed into law. When Biden proposed help with broadband access, eldercare and preschool, conversation changed from not only roads and bridges but “figurative infrastructure,” Sokolowski said. “Many people asked, what is infrastructure if it’s not made out of steel or concrete? Infrastructure, in Latin, means underneath the structure,” he said. PERSEVERANCE: Its the name of NASAs latest Mars rover. It landed Feb. 18, 2021. “Perseverance is the most sophisticated rover NASA has ever sent to the Red Planet, with a name that embodies NASA’s passion, and our nation’s capability, to take on and overcome challenges,” the space agency said. The name was thought up by Alexander Mather, a 14-year-old seventh-grader at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, Virginia. He participated in an essay contest organized by NASA. He was one of 28,000 K-12 students to submit entries. NOMAD: The word had its moment with the 2020 release of the film “Nomadland.” It went on to win three Oscars in April 2021, including best picture, director (Chloé Zhao) and actress (Frances McDormand). Zhao became the first woman of color to win best director. The APs film writer Jake Coyle called the indie success “a plain-spoken meditation on solitude, grief and grit. He wrote that it “struck a chord in a pandemic-ravaged year. It made for an unlikely Oscar champ: A film about people who gravitate to the margins took center stage. Other words in Merriam-Websters Top 10: Cicada (we had an invasion), guardian (the Cleveland Indians became the Cleveland Guardians), meta (the lofty new name of Facebooks parent company), cisgender (a gender identity that corresponds to ones sex assigned at birth), woke (charged with politics and political correctness) and murraya (a tropical tree and the word that won the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee for 14-year-old Zaila Avant-garde). ___ Follow Leanne Italie on Twitter at http://twitter.com/litalie The post Merriam-Webster Chooses ‘Vaccine’ as 2021 Word of the Year – NBC Chicago appeared first on Patabook News .

Fauci fires back at Ted Cruz over COVID claims about Chinese lab

Dr. Anthony Fauci, seen here in May 2021, said on Saturday that it was likely the omicron variant was “going to go essentially all over.” (Jim Lo Scalzo/Pool via AP, File) WASHINGTON (AP) — Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government’s top infectious diseases expert, blasted Sen. Ted Cruz for suggesting that Fauci be investigated for statements he made about COVID-19 and said the criticism by the Texas Republican was an attack on science. “I should be prosecuted? What happened on Jan. 6, senator?” Fauci, who is President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser, said in an interview that aired Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” It was a reference to the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol by supporters of then-President Donald Trump that was stoked as Cruz helped lead GOP objections to Congress’ certifying the 2020 election results. “I’m just going to do my job and I’m going to be saving lives, and they’re going to be lying,” Fauci said. Some Republicans, including Cruz and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., have accused Fauci of lying to Congress when he denied in May that the National Institutes of Health funded “gain of function” research — the practice of enhancing a virus in a lab to study its potential impact in the real world — at a virology lab in Wuhan, China. Cruz has urged Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Fauci’s statements. Omicron variant showing ‘unusual but mild’ symptoms, South African doctor says Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, called the GOP criticism nonsense. “Anybody who’s looking at this carefully realizes that there’s a distinct anti-science flavor to this,” he said. Cruz and Paul say an October letter from NIH to Congress contradicts Fauci. But no clear evidence or scientific consensus exists that “gain of function” research was funded by NIH, and there is no link of U.S.-funded research to the emergence of COVID-19. NIH has repeatedly maintained that its funding did not go to such research involving boosting the infectivity and lethality of a pathogen. When asked in the CBS interview whether Republicans might be raising the claims to make him a scapegoat and deflect criticism of Trump, Fauci said, “of course, you have to be asleep not to figure that one out.” The post Fauci fires back at Ted Cruz over COVID claims about Chinese lab appeared first on Patabook News .

Newcomers on parade: Debuts from brands that are not household names

Between the Los Angeles Auto Show and the Guangzhou auto show in China, this month has seen dozens of vehicle debuts — but many came from companies the U.S. industry barely knows. Not yet, anyway. Unfamiliar brands are emerging for a shot at global automaking, hoping that consumers have a new willingness to look at electric vehicles and advanced technologies regardless of whether they come from established manufacturers or startups. Canoo prototype van (shown above) EV startup Canoo showed a prototype electric van in L.A. Last spring, Canoo said it would build an assembly plant in Oklahoma, scheduled to open in 2023. Until then, the plan is to use VDL Nedcar in the Netherlands as a contract manufacturer. Canoo says the van will go on sale yet this year starting at $34,750. With new mobile app, customers get perks, Stellantis gets intel

Stellantis partnered with rewards app Miles for the program and launched a pilot late last year to see how it would resonate with users. Around 80 percent donated a portion of their miles to charities such as Toys for Tots and Habitat for Humanity. The automaker also started an initiative that allowed users to commit miles toward wildfire relief. Within 24 hours, nearly 600 of them had donated miles to have 1,000 trees planted. The dealership benefits were added to the program in October. Stellantis says the app automatically logs each trip along with the mode of transportation while keeping personal data private. People can track their miles earned per trip and receive personalized rewards or exclusive perks redeemable either online, at a nearby store or at a Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat or Alfa Romeo dealership. The idea was inspired by loyalty plans outside the auto industry. If all goes according to plan, the rewards program will drive more business to dealership service lanes. Oil change discounts would be a draw, but Chamarthi says customers also can redeem miles for accessories and merchandise from their favorite brands. Stellantis will detail its software plans and how it intends to make money from new business models Dec. 7. We want to get into the microtransactions, Chamarthi said. The more we know about the lifestyle choices of our customers, the more personalized our software offerings are to those customers. Skokie celebrates first night of Hanukkah with lighting of menorah

SKOKIE, Ill. – The Skokie community came together to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah.  The  Skokie Valley synagogue held an indoor and outdoor celebration. They went all out for the festival of lights.   In addition to the customary Menorah candle lighting, fire jugglers dazzled the crowd.     Organizers wanted to make sure the Hanukkah glow was extra bright Sunday night. They cited an old Jewish teaching, saying ‘a little light can chase away a lot of darkness, especially during challenging times.’        Happy Hanukkah from WGN!  Close Modal Suggest a Correction Suggest a Correction The post Skokie celebrates first night of Hanukkah with lighting of menorah appeared first on Patabook News .

Can world powers curb Iran in new nuclear talks?

JERUSALEM Can the landmark 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers be restored? As Iran and six global powers gather in Vienna Monday to discuss the tattered treaty, the answer appears to be no. Since then-President Donald Trump withdrew from the agreement in 2018, Iran has raced forward with its nuclear program, making it all but impossible to simply turn back the clock. The election of a hard-line leader in Iran, coupled with a U.S. administration seen as weak in the region, have further dampened prospects for a breakthrough. The outlook appears so grim that prominent voices in Israel, which pushed Trump to withdraw from the deal, are now saying the move was a huge mistake. Former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon, who fiercely opposed the original deal, was one of the rare Israeli voices to argue against withdrawal at the time. He now says the U.S. pullout has turned out to be the main mistake in the region of the past decade. A flawed deal, he told a security conference last week, probably was better than not having the agreement and to allow the Iranians to use the withdrawal as an excuse to go ahead with the project. Now they are in the closest stage they have been ever to become a (nuclear) threshold state, he said. Heres a closer look at the deal and what to expect this week: WHY DID THE ORIGINAL DEAL COLLAPSE? The 2015 agreement between Iran and world powers spearheaded by President Barack Obama aimed to prevent Iran from being able to build a nuclear bomb. It offered Iran relief from crippling economic sanctions in exchange for curbs of 10 to 15 years on its nuclear activities. Iran says its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes.                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Critics, led by then-Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, assailed the deal because the restrictions on Iran were temporary. They also complained it did not address Irans non-nuclear military activity such as its support for hostile militant groups and development of long-range missiles. When Trump withdrew, with strong urging from Netanyahu, he promised a campaign of maximum pressure on Iran. However, the approach appears to have backfired. Despite increased U.S. sanctions, Irans government remains firmly in power, and the country has raced forward with nuclear research banned by the original deal. CANT THE DEAL JUST BE REINSTATED? Iran began exceeding the limits of the agreement after the U.S. withdrawal, and now enriches small amounts of uranium up to 60% purity a short step from weapons-grade levels of 90%. Iran also spins advanced centrifuges once barred by the accord and its uranium stockpile now far exceeds the accords limits. Experts say that even if Iran were forced to give up its uranium stockpile or halt its research, the expertise it has gained cannot be taken away. WHAT ARE THE PROSPECTS FOR THIS WEEKS TALKS?                                                                                                                                                                                                                           In the short term, it does not look encouraging. Heading into the talks, Irans hard-line president, Ebrahim Raisi, has made maximalist demands, including calls for the U.S. to unfreeze $10 billion in assets as an initial goodwill gesture. The tough line might be an opening gambit. European negotiators remain confident a deal will be reached in the short to medium term. But U.S. officials do not appear optimistic. President Joe Biden and his top advisers have held a series of meetings in recent weeks with key allies and negotiating partners to prepare for the possible failure of talks. Because of Trumps withdrawal, the Americans wont even be in the negotiating room. Instead, they will be nearby and work through mediators. In an interview broadcast Friday, chief U.S. negotiator Rob Malley said signs from Iran are not particularly encouraging. Speaking to NPR, he said the U.S. prefers a diplomatic solution. But if that is impossible, he said the U.S. will respond accordingly. The options that are at Americas disposal are, you know, theyre familiar to all, he said. Given the tepid U.S. response to alleged Iranian military activity in the region, including attacks on civilian shipping in the Persian Gulf and a strike on a U.S. base in Syria, U.S. military action does not seem to be a serious threat. The United States bungled pullout from Afghanistan has further eroded American credibility in the region. Im very pessimistic, said Yoel Guzansky, a former official in the Israeli prime ministers office who is now a senior fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv. Iran shows patience, resilience, determination. Im sorry to say the Americans dont show that, and we dont have a lot of time. WHAT CAN ISRAEL DO? Israel is not a party to the talks, but it has a huge stake in the outcome. It considers Iran to be its No. 1 enemy and views a nuclear-armed Iran as an existential threat. Israel is believed to be the only nuclear-armed state in the region, though it does not publicly acknowledge its own arsenal. Netanyahus successor, Naftali Bennett, has been careful not to clash with Biden in public. But his positions are similar to Netanyahus. He has expressed hope an improved deal would emerge from the talks but reiterated Israels longstanding threat to take unilateral action if necessary. We will maintain our freedom to act, he said last week. On Sunday, he said Israel is very disturbed by what he sees as a willingness by the global powers to lift sanctions and reinstate insufficient restrictions in the nuclear sphere. He said Israel has been passing this message to all concerned parties. Despite such threats, Israel might hesitate. Iran has spent the past decade scattering its nuclear sites and hiding them deep underground. Plus, Israel might be reluctant to sabotage a global diplomatic effort. IS IRAN OVERPLAYING ITS HAND? China and Russia, two important Iranian outlets for trade and parties to the deal, could grow impatient with Tehran, especially if a now-shaky system of international nuclear inspections falls apart. Economic pressure continues to squeeze Iranians, who have seen their savings evaporate with the free-fall of the countrys currency. If talks drag on, the U.S. might turn to new sanctions or even military action. Theres also the risk of a military intervention by Israel. Well see in the coming days what exactly Irans approach will be, State Department spokesman Ned Price said last week. But weve also been very clear that this is not a process that can go on indefinitely. ___ Associated Press writers Ellen Knickmeyer in Washington, Jon Gambrell in Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Ilan Ben Zion in Jerusalem and Lorne Cook in Brussels contributed reporting.                                                                                                                                                                                                                         The post Can world powers curb Iran in new nuclear talks? appeared first on Patabook News .

Supreme Court justices could overturn Roe v. Wade with Mississippi, Texas abortion laws impacting Planned Parenthood clinics

WASHINGTON Both sides are telling the Supreme Court theres no middle ground in Wednesdays showdown over abortion. The justices can either reaffirm the constitutional right to an abortion or wipe it away altogether. Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 ruling that declared a nationwide right to abortion, is facing its most serious challenge in 30 years in front of a court with a 6-3 conservative majority that has been remade by three appointees of President Donald Trump. SEE ALSO | Illinois House gives final approval to repeal abortion parental notification for girls under 18 There are no half measures here, said Sherif Girgis, a Notre Dame law professor who once served as a law clerk for Justice Samuel Alito. A ruling that overturned Roe and the 1992 case of Planned Parenthood v. Casey would lead to outright bans or severe restrictions on abortion in 26 states, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a research organization that supports abortion rights. The case being argued Wednesday comes from Mississippi, where a 2018 law would ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, well before viability. The Supreme Court has never allowed states to ban abortion before the point at roughly 24 weeks when a fetus can survive outside the womb. The justices are separately weighing disputes over Texas much earlier abortion ban, at roughly six weeks, though those cases turn on the unique structure of the law and how it can be challenged in court, not the abortion right. Still, abortion rights advocates were troubled by the courts 5-4 vote in September to allow the Texas law, which relies on citizen lawsuits to enforce it, to take effect in the first place. This is the most worried Ive ever been, said Shannon Brewer, who runs the only abortion clinic in Mississippi, the Jackson Womens Health Organization. The clinic offers abortions up to 16 weeks of pregnancy and about 10% of abortions it performs take place after the 15th week, Brewer said. RELATED | Planned Parenthood Illinois rallies against Texas abortion law in Federal Plaza She also noted that since the Texas law took effect, the clinic has seen a substantial increase in patients, operating five days or six days a week instead of two or three. Lower courts blocked the Mississippi law, as they have other abortion bans that employ traditional enforcement methods by state and local officials. The Supreme Court had never before even agreed to hear a case over a pre-viability abortion ban. But after Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburgs death last year and her replacement by Justice Amy Coney Barrett, the third of Trumps appointees, the court said it would take up the case. Trump had pledged to appoint pro-life justices and predicted they would lead the way in overturning the abortion rulings. Only one justice, Clarence Thomas, has publicly called for Roe to be overruled. The court could uphold the Mississippi law without explicitly overruling Roe and Casey, an outcome that would satisfy neither side. Abortion-rights advocates say that result would amount to the same thing as an outright ruling overturning the earlier cases because it would erase the rationale undergirding nearly a half-century of Supreme Court law. SEE ALSO | Chicago rally fights for abortion justice, reproductive rights amid new restrictive Texas law A decision upholding this ban is tantamount to overruling Roe. The ban prohibits abortion around two months before viability, said Julie Rikelman, who will argue the case for the clinic. On the other side, abortion opponents argue that the court essentially invented abortion law in Roe and Casey, and shouldnt repeat that mistake in this case. If the justices uphold Mississippis law, theyll have to explain why, said Thomas Jipping, a Heritage Foundation legal fellow. They can either overrule the two big cases, Jipping said, or theyre going to have to come up with another made-up rule. Conservative commentator Ed Whelan said such an outcome would be a massive defeat on par with the Casey decision in 1992, in which a court with eight justices appointed by Republican presidents unexpectedly reaffirmed Roe. This court appears far more conservative than the one that decided Casey, and legal historian Mary Ziegler at Florida State Universitys law school, said the court probably would overrule Roe or set us on a path to doing so. Chief Justice John Roberts might find the more incremental approach appealing if he can persuade a majority of the court to go along. Since Roberts became chief justice in 2005, the court has moved in smaller steps on some issues, even when it appeared there was only a binary choice. RELATED | Supreme Court hearing on Texas abortion law closely watched by supporters, opponents It took two cases for the court to rip out the heart of the federal Voting Rights Act that curbed potentially discriminatory voting laws in states with a history of discrimination. In the area of organized labor, the court moved through a series of cases that chipped away at public sector unions power. The high court also heard two rounds of arguments over restrictions on independent spending in the political arena before removing limits on how much money corporations and unions can pour into election advocacy. If the court looks to public sentiment, it would find poll after poll that shows support for preserving Roe, though some surveys also find backing for greater restrictions on abortion. Mississippi is one of 12 states ready to act almost immediately if Roe is overturned. Those states have enacted so-called abortion trigger laws that would take effect and ban all or nearly all abortions. Women in those states wanting abortions could face drives of hundreds of miles to reach the nearest clinic or they might obtain abortion pills by mail. Medication abortions now account for 40% of abortions. Some legal briefs in the case make clear that the end of Roe is not the ultimate goal of abortion opponents.
