<p>Israel appears to be on the brink of a new political era after an awkward coalition of parties from across the political spectrum announced it had formed a government.</p> <p>Taking negotiations up to the wire, opposition leader Yair Lapid informed the country’s president late on Wednesday that he had struck a power-sharing deal with a broad grouping of right, centre and centre-left parties.</p> <p>The formation of a ‘change government’ should, in theory, bring to an end 12 years in power for prime minister <a href="https://news.sky.com/topic/benjamin-netanyahu-6264" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Mr Netanyahu</strong></a> and two years of political stagnation with four inconclusive elections but there are still hurdles to jump.</p> <div class="sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image"> <figure class="sdc-article-image__figure"> <div class="sdc-article-image__wrapper" data-aspect-ratio="16/9"> <img class="sdc-article-image__item" loading="lazy" intrinsicsize="768x432" src="https://e3.365dm.com/21/06/768x432/skynews-israel-naftali-bennett_5403423.jpg?20210602210034" srcset="https://e3.365dm.com/21/06/384x216/skynews-israel-naftali-bennett_5403423.jpg?20210602210034 380w, https://e3.365dm.com/21/06/768x432/skynews-israel-naftali-bennett_5403423.jpg?20210602210034 760w, https://e3.365dm.com/21/06/1600x900/skynews-israel-naftali-bennett_5403423.jpg?20210602210034 1024w, https://e3.365dm.com/21/06/2048x1152/skynews-israel-naftali-bennett_5403423.jpg?20210602210034 2048w" sizes="(min-width: 1024px) 1024px, 100vw" alt="Naftali Bennett will serve as prime minister for two years"> </div><figcaption class="sdc-article-image__caption"> <span class="sdc-article-image__visually-hidden">Image:</span><br /> <span class="sdc-article-image__caption-text">Naftali Bennett is set to serve as PM for two years</span><br /> </figcaption></figure> </div> <p>Under the deal, Mr Lapid, a former journalist turned centrist politician, has agreed that the right-wing leader of the much smaller Yamina party, Naftali Bennett, will serve as PM for the first two years before handing the leadership to Mr Lapid.</p> <p>The coalition’s only real unity comes in wanting to remove Mr Netanyahu. We have seen in the past that he pulls magic out of his sleeve when people started to sum up his career. But anyone will agree with me that he is one of the greatest leaders in Israel’s history.”</p> <p>He continued: “I think we have to be patient. We have to wait until the last minute, until the last vote will be counted in the parliament. Only then when the new government will be sworn, we can trust they can still speak about a new era in our politics.”</p> <p>The vote of confidence in the new government will take place next week, probably on Wednesday. That gives Mr Netanyahu and his allies a narrow window to try to lure members of the new coalition away, chipping away at the majority.</p> <p>One source close to the negotiations told Sky News: “We’re in for days of hell.”</p> <p><strong>Follow the Daily podcast on <a href="https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpodcasts.apple.com%2Fgb%2Fpodcast%2Fsky-news-daily%2Fid951048357%3Fmt%3D2&data=04%7C01%7CAnnie.Joyce%40sky.uk%7C92c00ea766d54a31bfc008d8b47358c3%7C68b865d5cf184b2b82a4a4eddb9c5237%7C0%7C0%7C637457754788654687%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=uXofkZ5KkFCZXYWSTd2ZQDIJwYD2aUN7KVxdgs%2FKxr4%3D&reserved=0">Apple Podcasts</a>, <a href="https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpodcasts.google.com%2Ffeed%2FaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc3ByZWFrZXIuY29tL3Nob3cvMzI4NzI0Ni9lcGlzb2Rlcy9mZWVk&data=04%7C01%7CAnnie.Joyce%40sky.uk%7C92c00ea766d54a31bfc008d8b47358c3%7C68b865d5cf184b2b82a4a4eddb9c5237%7C0%7C0%7C637457754788654687%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=z45pWC%2BvVAkQYEy78MfFAV4Fvkp0%2FhF%2FN4PS5sI71sg%3D&reserved=0">Google Podcasts</a>, <a href="https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fopen.spotify.com%2Fshow%2F3RdXZrbbG3NydLsPYmRSJy&data=04%7C01%7CAnnie.Joyce%40sky.uk%7C92c00ea766d54a31bfc008d8b47358c3%7C68b865d5cf184b2b82a4a4eddb9c5237%7C0%7C0%7C637457754788664642%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=6QIgElX88qoN2ZTuNmUbcys04CgP%2FyVURHVyHTuo5VE%3D&reserved=0">Spotify</a>, <a href="https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.spreaker.com%2Fshow%2Fsky-news-daily&data=04%7C01%7CAnnie.Joyce%40sky.uk%7C92c00ea766d54a31bfc008d8b47358c3%7C68b865d5cf184b2b82a4a4eddb9c5237%7C0%7C0%7C637457754788664642%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=YwQC4dPx%2F0MKP%2FCWZ%2FB04RplC5Ibj27BpLBACjCbIDs%3D&reserved=0">Spreaker</a></strong></p> <p>Assuming it lasts, the coalition is unlikely to be able to push through any of its individual party’s more radical policies.</p> <p>But the process of running the country in its most basic form can resume and it will bring to an end a prolonged period of political deadlock.</p> <p>The post <a rel="nofollow" href="https://patabook.com/news/2021/06/02/netanyahus-12-years-in-power-set-to-end-as-rivals-agree-to-form-coalition-government/">Netanyahu’s 12 years in power set to end as rivals agree to form coalition government</a> appeared first on <a rel="nofollow" href="https://patabook.com/news">Patabook News </a>.</p>
